Your LVDS connector on the logic board is still intact with the original metal shroud but the solder pads for pins 1 and 32 are torn off the board? And you are still able to plug the display LVDS connector into the logic board but the display shows nothing? You do hear a startup chime so it sounds like it is strictly the display issue.

A few quick experiments....

1) plug another display into the mini display port connector and make sure everything boots and there are no oth issues. A miniDP to DVI connector attached to any LCD display should suffice.

2) Shine a flashlight at the middle of the screen and verify that you can not see the apple logo when it boots. This is to make sure that this is not just a backlight issue. If the backlight was not working you would still be able to see faint images with the flashlight.

3) if the logic board LVDS connector is angled up away from the board try pushing it back down into place. I once had a 27" blank display that I fixed by straightening the connector back down close to flush with the logic board. When it was angled up something may have been shorting or maybe an open pin. Once the connector was back down against the board it fixed the issue.

Is it possible to get some clearer pictures of your actual connector? It would help me to help you.

Good luck.

I dont think there was ever 32 pins i took front cover off my LCDS connector and only counted 30 gold slots for it to go into so how can there be 32 pins? I currently have 30 pins and by counting slots it goes into is also 30?

I want to try everything and appreciate your feedback i dont think i need 32 pins tho anymore? I think i have right number pins now unless im wrong. The only thing i havent tried so far is putting my harddrive in? But i cant see that changing the display.. If I can hear noise at startup etc I cant be too far wrong with where im goin?? Or can I??

Dont think I have any screens that will work, I know my laptop atm i have plugged into vga cable? but i dont see vga slot on apple imac?

At least if i could and i seen picture I could eliminate actual screen?

this is not a repair site. But I have torn apart many macs and put them back together.

I have a question did this machine ever work after you put the new hard drive in? You mention the screen fell off later that night you never said it booted and worked after you replaced the hdd.

Yes this computer worked after I replaced hard drive, came home drunk and hadnt screen screwed in and knocked it, yes my own fault 100% but just looking help to fix it. Not long ago paid 500 stg to repair, I don't wanna do that again that's why im on this site and yes my own stupidiness im just looking for guidance to fix it. Apple dont justify their prices to repair, The only way this machine getting fixed is help from you's.

Honestly im lost now, tried for 8 hours today differ things I wont stop, I have a feeling its basic nuff but its finding that basic thing and i know it wont be easy but every little helps a man

Take a non blurry photo of your actual connector.

Those pins probably aren't in use. Impossible for them just to vanish if the connector is intact.

Remember kids: Drinking and iMac repair don't mix.

You want me take a close up pic of the pins on logic board yes?

You would need a mini display port to VGA dongle. They are pretty cheap on eBay but that requires shipping time. Not sure if you can find a local source.

Example of what I mean (not endorsing this particular vendor... just using as example of what to look for).

fix pending

I have got the same problem and I just order the LVDS connector from eBay and waiting for the delivery. Once I get it solder back to the board, I will update. it is now cost me $50 for the soldering kit and $10 for 2x connector (just in case in screw it up again) . I have watch video on youtube I have the idea how to fix it. if I can get a good result. why cann't you do it, right? I am a novice on soldering:p

How did your repair go? Have we found a pin out diagram for the LVDS connector to confirm that pin 1 and 32 are ground?

I wouldn't even begin to try soldering some of those micro connectors. I suppose you have nothing left to risk at this time if you want to try it but in many cases the tips of a lot of soldering iron, even when fine tipped, will be bridging two pins simultaneously. Another option might be to go to eBay and pick up an iMac of the same that's functional but with a bad display (burned out, cracked, etc). That way you could canibalize the logic board from the old unit...just make sure it says it's really the screen that went bad.

i would agree that there is nothing left to do but give it a go. I recently bought a late 2009 27" and after stripping it down to clean it and re paste the CPU and GPU (due to age and it never had a service) I broke the LVDS putting the screen back on... I ordered the LVDS off eBay and am waiting on it arriving. I have all the tools required to do the job (quality "metcal" soldering station, hot air station, quality amtech flux and solder mop) it's been over a year since I touched anything electronic though so I'm a bit apprehensive... Wantin the postman to hurry up though!!!

Buy some solder paste (basically flux with solder in it), really useful when hand soldering surface mounted components

I have solder paste but didn't need it... The repair went smoothly using a fine tip, 0.5mm leaded solder, plenty of amtech flux and solder wick. I can confirm that the pads either side are both ground ( to help hold the LVDS to the main board as well as the main large square pads ) I'm a happy man... Cheap 27" Mac to play with ;)
