In regards to the architecture, the m295x uses AMD's new Tonga, while the m290x is still older Tahiti.
With that in mind the m295x is not far off performance wise from the Mac Pro's Tahiti based D700. It does make me wonder how much better a Tonga base D700 would have been.
In either case we'll need to wait for thorough reviews to appear and put the systems through their paces. Hopefully we both get our answers.
No, the M290X is based on Pitcairn. It's basically the Radeon HD 7870 and the Radeon 270X. Released back in March 2012 ...
