I am testing out an upgrade for the iMac's and Mac Mini's to the Intel Q9000-Q9300 series processors. I run a Mac repair business and would like to offer this service but need guinea pigs!!! If you are local in the SF area I would like to see you and your machine for a little surgery :) I am almost 100% positive that any iMac or Mac Mini with a Penryn Processor can be upgraded. If you are out of the area and want to ship me your machine I can do that as well.

Here is the deal. The first customer to bring me a machine from each series will be eligible for free labor and warranty on my work, all you have to pay for is the processor.

odd on wikipedia it says the mini has a socketed proc

It is important to read the article completely.

Wikipedia said:
With the switch to the Intel Core Solo and Duo line, Apple uses a socketed CPU in the Mac Mini that allows the processor to be replaced. With the 2009 model they switched to a new glue process that does not allow for an easy upgrade.

Before 09, they were socketed. This new model could be socketed but the OP hasn't offered any evidence to suggest that.

I think that Wikipedia also has the processor models wrong (on at least two). They list the late 2009 - 2.66 GHz as the P9600. However the P9600 has 6MB of L2 cache. On Apple’s site they list the specs for all 3 processor options as having 3MB L2 cache. That means that the 2.66 GHz in the late 2009 Mini is most likely the P8800.

Also, they list the Late 2009 - 2.26GHz as the P7550 (which is socketed and not likely correct). More likely it is the P8400. So they are all in series:
2.26 GHz = P8400
2.53 GHz = P8700
2.66 GHz = P8800

My guess is that these all share the same glued vs. socket set up that the early 2009 Minis did. I would love to be wrong and see a socket exist on at least one of the 3 processor options, but I doubt that is the case.

The current and previous generation 2009 Minis do not have a replaceable CPU.

Yea I was just going on the fact that the GMA950 version is socketed. Does anyone have pics of the 9400m Mini board? I have yet to open one up.

Also the mini comes with a P7350 C2D which is listed as Socket P.

The $799 config Mini (2.53) is NOT socketed. Already brought mine home and cracked it open....going to selling this one and getting a 2.66....

You paid $800 to find out what has been all around the internet for 6 months?

I was the first one to confirm that the Early 2009 were NOT SOCKETED. I bought an upgrade for the additional speed, not to find out if it was socketed or not......

And we (well, I at least) appreciate your trouble so I don't have to go through the hassle.

There are places that will do BGA rework too so that is an option although it adds to the cost.

Or can you describe the epoxy used? Picture would be even better.
