This is pretty quick considering that I only just put my first design on the forums yesterday, but I'm pretty pleased with the new look. I listened to the criticisms mentioned in the previous thread, and so here's the new design.

iMacdesign2.png

New features include -
  • Pressing the :apple: logo will now start up the iMac
  • Theres a trackpad and iPod dock built in (I know some of you wanted touch screen, but tough :p)
  • Moved the ports of the screen itself to the back of the stand, where they rightfully belond. This helps eliminate clutter even more.
  • One idea not show in the picture is UPS. Now when your power cuts out, your Mac will stay online for an hour, just enough for to safely finish up, save and shut down. This is amazing for moving your Mac around. Just unplug it, move it, then plug it back in, and your Mac hasn't changed one bit!

Of course, there may be improvements in the future, but for now I'm pleased with this. Please let me know what you think! Any (constructive) criticism is greatly welcomed :)

Here's a link to the original design, and the original thread.

Yeah the trackpad is kinda weird, they are only useful (and needed) on portables. I like the idea that it has a emergency power supply built in, though.

I think the track pad is a poor idea.

A) Your arm would have to be fully outstreched to reach it or your face would be pressed up against the 24" screen.
B) Trackpads suck
C) The only reason laptops have trackpads is because it is not always practical to have/use a mouse. This is a desktop where it is [almost] always more practical to have a mouse.
D) Trackpads suck

Overall, I think your design is too "inside the box" and a step back in my opinion. Also, is there a reason why the iSight is offset?

I like the idea that it has a emergency power supply built in, though.

I like the idea . . . but does the massive lead battery needed for an hour of power provide the counterweight to keep the thing upright?

While it's an impressive effort at a mockup, I'm thinking there's no way it's that thin in all dimensions.

The iSight being offset is entirely my fault sorry - I placed it before I placed the stand, so I will try and fix this asap.

The trackpad is in no way designed to replace the mouse. I know trackpads are poor compared to mouses, but it was just designed as a back up in case something happened really.

The UPS was designed to counterbalance yes. I understand that this design is very unrealistic, as it would one, not probably carry enough counter balance on it's own, and two, the size of the thing would limit any carrying around of it you did. However, I genuinely believe that UPS' should be implemented in computers, as they represent a genuine protection against power cuts.

And finally, yeah it is a tad bit thin for realism, but I was only going for a semi-realistic approach here. Obviously theres no way my design would work in real life, but I can dream ^_^

The last picture is awkward, did you cut it off or something???

I like the new look and the features but the trackpad is unnecessary, who will use it...?

If that thing was real, I would buy it, it really looks great.

Yeah, the pictures are cut off sharply, rather than faded.

That simply is because I have no idea how to do gradient fades in Flash :/ (I love flash for drawing, vector FTW!) - If anybody knows how this could be possible, would be greatly appreciated.

And thanks for all the pointers guys :) Didn't know the trackpad would be so disliked, heh.

Another mockup

Hi. A week before WWDC '07, i thought a new iMac would be released, so I made a quick mockup of my own. It's just one image, and it's much less revolutionary compared to the one from MattJessop. See it here, and comment please!:)

The ability to change it to portrait would be awesome but it wouldn't be possible if it was anything like the G5.
I don't like the idea of a trackpad but I'd really like an iPod dock. :)

I really like the one above but it lacks any features such as ipod dock( rumor says two new features right?)

Looks to much like the Cinema Display for it to be different and new look but its simple

What I really want is an HD imac:D

I get the hint guys, the Trackpad sucks ;-)- I'll definetly remove it for next time :p - People really don't like it eh?

It also just occured to me that if you went to stick your iPod in the dock, your hand would probably brush against the trackpad anyway. Not that it would do much, but if you moved the mouse to somewhere and your wrist clicked the mouse, well  it could be really disasterous depending on where you clicked.

By the way uros643, that iMac is REALLY cool :) What did you use to design it? Not revolutionary as you admit, but it looks a lot more evolutionary to the current iMacs.

Thansk for that!

Computer monitors use a different ratio for widescreen displays; I think they're closer to the golden ratio.
1920x1080 is the "True HD" resolution and the 24" iMac is capable of displaying such content with some room to spare.

You forgot to incorporate a touchscreen/pull out keyboard in case some "other" things happen, and similarly a backup hard drive for yet other unexpected occurences.

Oh and in case there is a hurricane coming, it needs a satelite uplink to backup to a remote data centre! And put in 3 of those so there is some redundancy there!

My opinion (meaning which I would most like to spend my money on):

Favorite: uros643. Very elegant and so "iMac". It really captures the essence of the machine but looks so modern compared to the current iMac.

2nd favorite: MattJessop. Also very nice but I prefer the base and squared edges on the uros643 iMac.

Least favorite (would not buy): That translucent one posted by topgunn.

I am fairly confident that the actual new iMac will be similar to the uros643 and MattJessos iMacs. Remember the rumors about a month ago of a brushed aluminum iMac? I think that is what is coming and these 2 guys are on the right track.
