I didn't feel like waiting the 4-6 weeks to get the ATI 4850 card so I opted for the GT 130. Its supposed to be along the same lines as the 9600M that is in the MBP which was enough performance for me. The $50 for the upgrade would of been fantastic if it wasn't for that ridiculously long lead time of getting it.

Are you serious? You won't wait 4-6 weeks for a component that you'll be using for what could be 50-100 weeks?

I think it'd be worth the wait.

Awesome! Crysis Warhead is the only game this iMac can't run on high with over 30 fps. Sounds like a good gaming machine.

yes but that confirms that video cards of the new imacs are not on the logic board, and that is because they could replace my ati 2600 for a new 8800gs.

I would contact my seller if he can gets me an ati 4850

i'll probably say soo...how they replace the ati 2600 for a new 8800gs in the 2.8ghz imac? If that is possible, then its possible too replace the 8800gs for a 4850 right?

Yes they first plug in a ati 2600 and then think no wait it had to be a 8800gs, or wait no a 4850.

I'm sorry to say this, but geez you idiot, the plug the thing in place and solder it tight... done deal. You cannot replace it by yourself, or you are some kind of engineer at Apple and know how to solder.

probably refering to the old white version that used the MXM slot for the nvidia 7600. Don't think they use that anymore but let's wait until someone cracks one open.

Even if they used some sort of GPU slot, no one ever made aftermarket MXM cards so the point was moot.

Cheers,

Its all fine Flying, i understand that you cant trust in what im telling here, but is true. Im not an engineer at apple, but im close to graduate from Systems Engineer :D lol

Im from Argentina, and here the imac 3.06 ghz with a nvidia 8800gs doesn't sell because it's too expensive here; for that reason, they offer me the possibility to make an upgrade to an 2008 imac that it has an ati 2600 for a 8800gs paying U$S 200 difference from the original price.

Before such a thing, i checked the imac before that change and it has the ati 2600, that why im interested of the possibility of a new upgrade for my imac.

OK, now I am confused. I just had an online chat with an Apple Rep, and this is what I found:

ME: I am wondering if the Radeon 4850 in the iMac is the mobility version or the "full" desktop version?
APPLE REP: I'm happy to assist with that.
APPLE REP: And that is a great question.
APPLE REP: Itis not the mobility version.
APPLE REP: This is the full graphics processor.
A little later in the chat...
ME: The version in the iMac is the 100% full performance version.
APPLE REP: Yes it is.

Also, I called 1800MYAPPLE and they told me the same thing. It is the Desktop Version, NOT the mobility.

I don't know anymore. Are they wrong or are we wrong?

Well, until our friends at ifixit.com crack open a top end machine in 4 - 6 weeks we'll just have to wait ...

Having posted earlier about the power draw i still think its the mobility part ... the iMac on full draw pulls 280w for the whole system including monitor

The ATI site says the minimum PSU to support the 4850 is a 475w

Perhaps they are using the Desktop part, but they have underclocked it?

Here is what I got when I asked about clock speed on the 4850:
Thanks for waiting, there really isn't any information available in relation to that.

An underclocked desktop chip is kinda what a mobility part is ... same ram, same core processor but underclocked for heat / power and designed to be mounted on a board more directly and therefore non-upgradable..

I believe the mobility 4850 runs at about 500Mhz whereas the desktop runs closer to 675 ... ditto the GDDR3 ram ...

That's one of the myths of power use. Graphics cards don't draw that much power. They give those requirements in order to avoid being sued by someone frying their computer because their PSU wasn't up to par. Using a quality PSU and knowing how much a system actually draws is whats important.

For example, my old PC had an 8800GTX in there. It said it required 500W. In truth, it ran just fine with my Antec 380W PSU and I still had room to spare. My Kill-A-Watt read my entire system at 220W at load at the wall, so take in an 80% efficiency on the system and I was running a grand total of 176W from the system components.

Just because a system can spare that much power doesn't mean it uses that much! My 1000W PSU I use in my enthusiat desktop doesn't use 1000W all the time - it just has the headroom to supply 1000W if I ever need it. And yet, despite a 4870X2 saying it requires 700W PSU.... even with two water cooling loops, an OC'd Extreme Quad core, OC'd RAM, 3 hard drives, etc., my system as a whole pulls less than 500W frrom the wall at load.

Ati Mobility Radeon 4850

Uhm, i wonder if the performance of Age of Empires III The War Chiefs and The Asian Dynasties will be fine by this video card. Because i want to buy a new iMac and don't want to get disappointed:rolleyes:
