Exactly. And again I'm all for the designing, I like the way Apple computers look.

But performance is a different matter and isn't related to design in any way. Design is no replacement for specs (of course not).

If they want to be respectable they need to continue delivering on the design front, and also deliver on the performance front. They can't simply ignore one front because they are delivering on the other one.

My iMac has thermal throttling and image retention, now going on the third internal display

all because apple wanted to make the damned thing thinner :(

This is actually a good thing. I love that Macs look so good that they are viewed as artistic by people, that doesn't have to have anything to do with specs. A computer can look good AND perform well, sadly Apple doesn't perform so well on the hardware side of things.

That falls down completely when you leave things out like ports and hobble keyboards in the quest for a uniform esthetic design.

Nando Principle: 'nando it's not how you feel it's how you look, It's better to look good than feel good

And that ties into another point, I'm all for a company trying to make as an attractive computer as they can.

But if the design is such that it affects overall performance, you have a problem. It is unfortunate that Apple think it appropriate to sacrifice functionality for thinness of all things.

That's the Apple way it seems, just look at the MBP and the loss of HDMI and the SD slot, yet they kept the headphone jack, which they told us it took courage to remove it from the phone.

My iMac doesn't run hot, but admittedly I really don't push it hard either, but I think it would have been an even better computer if they didn't make so thin and the heat dissipation would have been better

If you said this it means you aren't understanding the underlying idea of my point.

The entire point of what I'm saying is it is possible, in theory, to achieve great design without sacrificing performance or functionality. This is the standard that Apple should be striving for. They are not.

Holy crap....are you talking about your 2014 riMac m295x i7?

Wow that sucks. This is a major reason why I purchased the base model back in 2014. I simply did not trust the longevity with the reported temps that the max out iMac users were reporting early on. I posted this back in 2014 about being worried with the potential thermal problems and looks like it might hold true about you posted with the thermal throttling and image retention https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/base-retina-imac-safest-choice.1827032/#post-20468694

Apple definitely rushed the 2014 iMacs before they were ready. Since I was on a base model I had to deal with laggy UI performance at the beginning because Yosemite had issues with the M290 cards. They did get this fixed and I will admit my base model has been pretty much excellent since but it's obviously not a workhorse machine.

I switched from PC to Mac when Vista happened because I felt like Microsoft had actively made decisions which ruined my experience with PCs and with Windows.

I am beginning to worry that Apple is now walking down that same path. Their current desktop offerings are years outdated (literally 3 years with no refresh for the mac pro) and they're also faulty. Like.... I am on my third internal display on this iMac and if they continue to literally fry every time I hit compile in xcode then really I'll have no choice but to abandon Apple altogether.

Because think about it. If iMacs have inadequate cooling then I can't buy another iMac. Mac Pros haven't been refreshed in 3 years so obviously they're totally outrageous to buy right now both in terms of price and specs, and mac minis also haven't been refreshed and are too underpowered for me anyway. Macbooks are my only option and I already own a Macbook Pro and I specifically bought the iMac to have something more powerful.

So Apple hasn't forced me out as a customer because of their high prices....... they've forced me out because they make third rate products or choose to make no products at all.
