Modo user here, this could be its own thread about The Foundry :D.

They say they are working on a AS version of Modo, but no commitment and likely to be gradual release over who knows how long.

But even not optimised, I'm sure Modo will run much faster on my Studio than currently on my Mac Pro 5,1 and 6,1.

Yea I spoke to the guys at Foundry and they said they “might still” work on that. Lets assume they do are you of the opinion that the Studio would then be better than the imac pro?
If they are not committed to Apple Silicon, they are not committed to future support for Macintosh, since Apple Silicon is the future of the Mac. Which means you have to be prepared to switch software packages, switch platforms, or both, at some point.

I don't keep up with what the Foundry does these days and I agree that with the much higher single core performance of these AS chips basically any program that requires constant user input like a 3D tool should feel a ton snappier than on an older Intel.
But don't forget that Apple is also moving away from standards like OpenGL and not adopting Vulkan and the like. All those things that decades-old CG software with hardware acceleration is usually based around. Instead they want you to use their own thing. I can see that becoming a headache with any software that is only being ported to Mac, not primarily developed for it.

Assuming there will be an AS optimized version then it'll have to use Metal instead of OpenGL & co. Lets see how bug free they can be bothered to make that and maintain it through the years.

Apple used Modo as a showcase for Metal a few years ago. Even though Metal support never made it into a release version, at least it means The Foundry has a few years of experience with Metal to some degree. Is that worth anything? I don't know.

But I would think porting any software to AS without full Metal support would only be a half-baked and very shortsighted solution. I would think if you develop for AS you would go all the way, but what do I know about software development.
