I think Apple offering a external GPU as a good way of bumping up the graphics performance. Being it for those doing heavy video editing, photo or just wanting to game.

I'd be curious what sort of folks would want/need a Xeon inside of an iMac. Would it be for video editors? As a web app developer/photographer the core i7 is good for me. As most apps I use including Photoshop really don't take advantage of all the cores.

I do dabble a bit in Final Cut Pro X but I'm not editing huge 4k files.

Curios what apps do you use which would require/take advantage of all those cores?

It would be a great improvement for Audio production. Software plugins and Instruments require realtime processing. The more cores the more processing in Logic or Cubase.

Could be, but won't be. Not elegant enough ;) Kind of hilarious, though!
y, but it shows that its possible to use high performance components in a AIO setup where everything is replaceable/upgradable.
y its kinda ugly but in the end you sit in-front of the screen and see nothing else.
and it's not really thick at all while using high performance stuff, and water-cooled cpu so you can get serious workload done without any throttling.
i hope the iMac pro will not use laptop hardware.

I'm not like most others here in knowing what each company (Intel/AMD/NVidia etc.) offers; but I'd just like an iMac Pro that offers video editors the ability to edit high bit rate (500mb/s) 4K footage in multicam modes using original media with multiple audio tracks. I have no idea how possible this is, but I know that I'll be using Panasonic's GH5 cameras in 10 bit 4:2:2 for my wedding films at some point, so if it could have me covered on that end with perfect streaming with some LUTS added, I'll have my machine for the next five years sorted.

video describes it as a "low volume, built to order machine".
So no, the iMac Pro will not be like that.

As a pro musician using Cubase and running loads of virtual instruments and fx plugins live, I have absolutely no need for a blazingly fast and expensive GPU.

Put a 6 core i7 in the current machine, with space for two hard drives and the Pro Audio market would be sorted.

So are they going to keep 21, 27 regular imacs?

If so it can start with Xeon 16GB ECC and hopefully a desktop gpu. Maybe not upgradable but maybe a 1060 shrunk down for the imac. Then go up from there. Maybe offer radeon pro and quadro, but start with 1060 & 1070.

And yes custom LUTs. Wonder if they could add in a option for xeon e5 6 cores? Then just stop there.

The iMac Pro will be in ADDITION to their regular line up. It will have a XEON Processor with 6 or 8 cores and ECC memory. The biggest question let is which graphics chip? Would they be so bold as to go Nvidia for this pro machine? Unlikely. Or dual AMD chips somehow? Or at least an AMD 495X with 8GB graphics RAM? External graphics are now possible with TB3. Will Apple offer their own external, upgradable solution?

Eh, I'm not convinced Apple will use Intel's Xeon E5 series (which is required to get more than 4 cores). These tend to have worse single threaded performance and be hotter. All the rumors have pointed to using Intel's E3, which is essentially a core i7 with ECC memory support. Given Apples recommitment to the mac pro, they can make these the high core count machines.

For the GPU, I am hoping they add more thermal headroom with support for AMD's upcoming Vega or a high end Nvidia chip.

I was told by Bizon that they you couldn't use an external GPU with a 5K iMac. I am not very technical but I always need more VRAM for my flight simulation. The external GPU might make the 27" iMAC extremely pricy if you need to purchase an external GPU and card. Considering the 27" 5K is currently about 3700 list with Apple Care and then you add a couple of thousand for external GPU and the card. Wow.

I have a feeling that the iMac Pro and the next Mac Pro like the 2013 Mac Pro will be mostly a bad deal for musicians.
