I think some people here misunderstand me. I am talking about IMAC and not conventonal midi/high tower computers. For me an IMAC is something in between a desktop and a laptop since everything is integrated. Since everything is integrated, there is not much space to go on, at least the way they are designed. Here is where SSD could make a difference.

I recognize that SSD currently has a high price and low capacity. But this looks likely to change in 2009/2010. Don't forget that the IMAC has both firewire and USB2.0 ports, so it's possible to buy a external disk to get more capacity.

While the imac uses mostly laptop parts, it is still a desktop. I expect small hard-drives in terms of capacity in laptops. I don't in desktops and I see no real added value to an SSD in a desktop over a 7200 hard drive.

Why would they change it? It's beautiful, and the white plastic one was here for longer..

No way inhell will they put in a SSD.
i would be useless considering right now all the SSDs on the market are slower and consube more power than a 7200rpm laptop drive so a desktop drive is better than that.

I see this:
~20" and 24"
~2.66, 2.8Ghz Dual core, 2.8, 3.06, 3.3 Ghz Quad core
~Up to 2TB
~same case

What i want to see:
~30" option
~optional 1Gb Graphics memory w/ user replaceable cards
~Optional up to 8Gb of ram
~OLED screen
~Blu-ray
~2 FW800 ports or 1 FW800 and 1 FW1600
~4USB portson the back + 2 on the Keyboard

I agree that making the iMac thinner is pointless, but people have mentioned that they can not make the iMac any thinner than it is now and I must disagree. If I wanted to make a thinner iMac I would take the new nVidia based MacBook Pro put a 20 inch or 24 inch screen on it move the ports over to the overhang from the bigger screen around back like the current iMac make the Apple logo in the back plastic for the antennas and boom less than one inch thick iMac.

no reason for it though. Ok one for wall mounting but it is not that great of a TV so not really

oh you forgot OLED screen

a unibody design could mean easier serviceability for the end user (as seen in the laptops)…idk how, though!

I mentioned the fact that I think making it that thin was pointless, taking the MacBook Pro taking the screen, keyboard, trackpad battery etc. out, slapping it on the back of the new ACD and call it a day no chin iMac.

Why thinner, this looks cool & fine. I don't like the thinner foot of ACD either..

& Alu is way more beautiful than the older white one..

exactly its dumb its a desktop it is supposed to be thick

there wont be a smaller footprint, it has to support the whole computer
the reason the footprint has to be the same is they will most likely have larger HD options

it will stay 20 and 24 inch

speed will be bumped slightly to 3.3Ghz

will have option for 8gb RAM

firewire 400 will be dropped, firewire 800 will remain

there will be no cosmetic upgrades,
esp after ALL the people who will buy it for xmas this year...
they would have buyer backlash galore

my $.02

i had to ship back one of my 2 - 24inch imacs, 4gb ram, 1TB HD, because of gradation problems... i am a little upset that now a month after i get a replacement dec5 - jan5 .. a new iMac will come out, but i have reason to rejoice :)

they will have an iMac refresh, but my tech guy also works for apple in cupertino and he told all this info, he has never been wrong on ANY updates since he has worked there in 2004 (ipods, macs, iphones, etc.). :)

so im pretty confident he's right this time too.

That makes sense, given that 3.2 GHz is possible right now and there will be a speed bump early next year. I can see the 3.07 (3.2?) GHz on the second-to-highest model and the lower two bumped to 2.67/2.8 GHz or 2.67/2.93 GHz if things turn out well.

After that I'm not sure how fast dual-cores will go. With Nehalem it may be a good time to put (lower-clocked) quad-cores in the 24" model, update other components in it, and largely leave the 20" alone (or update that too, if we're not unlucky). But then again Apple hasn't put lower clocked quads with higher clocked duals.

Agreed, but it would be nice if the back was like the 24" ACD, then for me, it would look perfect.

yeah i like the black

How about this:
all white

Nah, all white is now out, which is sad, as it was such an iconic phase of design in apples history, literally, the 24" ACD, with a chin, is how I'd like to see the iMacs, I'll do a photoshop in a bit.

Sorry for the brief photoshoop, but you get the idea.

Yeah i really dont like the white anymore. It was awesome but it looks dated now. I still dont think the Alu back will work with Airport and bluetooth
