My 2014 retina imac had bad image retention and it's currently being fixed.

My only advice to new buyers who find this thread on google or elsewhere:

1. buy applecare

2. try and avoid macs with LG made monitors. Apple uses Samsung and LG. Only the LG's seem to have image retention

3. exchange your mac at the first indication of retention, because it will only get worse over time and warranty will run out otherwise (unless you're in the EU in which you have like 7 year warranty in some cases!)

I'm pretty sure only LG supplies Apple with the 5k panels. You're thinking of laptops.

I'm in the same boat. Did you have a hard time convincing them to repair it?

update: I want to whine some more about this issue. The replacement mac also has retention.

Another user says it's because these things run really hot, like 90C and it ruins the screen over time.

Probably true. I'm going to keep asking Apple for new screens until I get one that works, or until it's obvious this is an issue on every mac and then I'll sell it and.... I wont buy another Mac because there's no refreshed Mac Mini or Mac Pro.....

Be aware there are people that have posted on Macrumors with the same idea. They had a problem with an Apple product and repeatedly swapped it, eventually Apple told them 'no more'. So if you get one that is pretty good but not quite perfect you may want to consider keeping it anyway so you don't get stuck with an even worse unit.

Guys, I'm just a bit worried about that. Just ordered an 27" i7 iMac with 395 GPU last Friday.

I wouldn't mind one that has minor retention and just keeping it but my original imac screen started off not so bad and got really bad over time. My nightmare scenario is that even though the second display is not so bad, that it gets worse over time and I get stuck with no apple care and image retention.

I have no idea how common the issue is. All I can say is that I've had 2 displays on this iMac and each have had retention, and that my 2010 iMac did not have retention but did develop the square line problem after a few years. I just suggest buying apple care. If you encounter problems down the road you can get the mac fixed and if they're reoccurring problems you can just sell it tbh.

Personally I wont be buying any more iMacs, partly because of the retention but also because of how annoying they are to exchange parts. So each time I need to get the mac fixed I lose it for 10+ days :(

The m395 runs very cool. After several hours of use my 27" iMac with the m395 is cool the touch. I have not seen any retention issues with my iMac yet.

I sent the iMac back. I still have the nMP 2013 with D500. I thought about that but i came to a point where I realized that I would swap old overpriced **** against old expensive crap. I wanted to sell the nMP for the iMac. Now I'm going to keep the nMP till January/February and sell it then.

Anyway, I was looking up the specs of the Lenovo P710/P510 Workstation and the P7/510 has everything what I want and how a "real" Mac Pro should be.

I'm not completely done with Apple. Still own an iPhone and I'll keep it.

I have doubt that Apple will ever going to build good computers in the future. I mean they had the chance to update their whole Mac product line but the touchbar and a new MBP should be everything after how many years?
