These are the temperatures for my iMac at this moment, I have mail, iChat, messenger:mac and Skitch open. What's going on?

My Pentium 4 is at 68 right now. Low 50s is nathin. Also remember with a computer like the iMac, compromises in cooling have to be made in order to have such a pretty computer.

I was told that I shouldn't be getting temperatures over 50*C, generally about 43*C in my HDD, was that wrong?

This is my temp. As you can see, you're not very far removed from this. This was after a few hours of playing a game in Win XP under VMWare Fusion. I did bump up the cpu fan in smcfan control a wee bit.

Tom [edit: I do have my wireless and bluetooth turned off]

your temps are good nothing to worry......basically the cpus are ok for anything much in new imacs its just the hd temp to watch.....basically if hd is in 50-60 C for a long time that reduces the lifespan......just use smbfancontrol if worried or if u use gaming in bootcamp

basically if hd is in 50-60 C for a long time that reduces the lifespan

In theory! I know I won't be using my iMac in 4 years time. It will have been sold on ebay and upgraded to the latest one.

not sure what HD is in your iMac, but mine has a western digitial and on their website it says the operating temp goes up to 60 deg C I believe. With smcfancontrol mine usually sits at 48-50 deg C and occasionally get to 54 for short periods of time. I think an "avg temp" of 50 or below is fine for the HD.

Yeah, I know! I used to get really worried about how hot it got, but it's been working fine for three and a half years now, so I'm sure it's fine. I've never compared against any other iMac G5 owners though, so if you've got one, show us your temps! :)
