These are the temperatures for my iMac at this moment, I have mail, iChat, messenger:mac and Skitch open. What's going on?

On your iStat, you have CPU A and a temp.
On mine, I have two CPU A's listed for my iMac, with two different temps. Why is this? Why is one not CPU B? And why do you only have one showing?

Erk... too confusing for me :-(

How do I view the temp on a Imac?

When I touch on the top corners of my Imac 3 GHz, its very very hot... almost so hot its unbearable to hold... I am quite concerned.

Install a program which shows the temperatures using the inbuild temp sensors.
Istat is a good one. Just google it.

Oh btw guys. About the temps on iMac.

I would recommend at least to monitor the HDD temp and keep it under 50c.

My 6 month old 2.4GHz, 24" iMac's Western Digital hard disk head crashed and the whole disk died with the nice sound "tik, tik tik" ..i suspect it was due to the temperature which was about 54c idle. The mean time of hard disk failure sure correlates with temperature. For example, i have a more louder linux server which has proper cooling, and the disks are running 32c.

Good thing i had 1:1 backup of the whole disk, thanks to the Time Machine.

I was thinking already before the crash that it might be too hot, but i gave apple's designers the benefit of doubt.

I sure will be wiser in the future and speed the HDD fan a little bit from the default so it will keep under 50c ..that is, after i get my iMac back from the repair

Completely normal.

It's one of those. Did it die because of the temperature or is it pure coincidence? Since the new iMac was released in August 2007, we should have started seeing a rash of hard drive failures become apparent in February/March/April if it was a fundamental design fault and this affected hard drive performance.

Hard drive failure tends to follow a U shaped curve. Most hard drives fail in the first few days of use. Then there's a couple of years of low failure rates before it rises again 3 or 4 years down the line.
