iMac software update 1.1

Hmmm am I the only one who's iMac is cooler (in the temperature sense ) after the update?

I put my hand on top and it's only warm now. Before, it was HOT.

I've had my iMac running for about 3 hours (CPU 37º, GPU 51º, Memory 41º, Airport card 58º, Hard Drive 45º)

At these temperatures before the update, my iMac was running HOT. Now it's just warm. Anyone else got a similar result from the update? (No other real noticeable update except less crashing/freezing)

I did notice the same thing yesterday also it was alot cooler even after playing WoW for like 5 hours straight. But I still prefer the better performance that it had on WoW before this update. Is there a way to roll back the update because I really like the performance of the graphics driver prior to this update.

Yeah, mine is definitely running a fair bit cooler. It's no longer getting hot on the top after it's been abused for a while, just warm.

Nope!

I'm running Folding@Home 24/7. Even after the update this puppy is running pretty darn warm. Although Folding works the CPU (both cores) real hard, it doesn't do any graphics (SMP Beta5) so the GPU shouldn't contribute much to the heat. Here is a snapshot of my system:

mine won't shut down or restart now. when you install the update it says it needs to restart. i hit restart and the screen hangs with only the mouse and my desktop showing. the mouse still moves but nothing else. i tried re-installing the 1.1 update. i tried repairing permissions and the PRAM. still no luck.
any ideas??

Yes mine had a kernel panic about 4 or 5 times after doing the iMac 1.1 update. I am sure they will sort this out.

Mine has been working great since the update! It's a lot snappier than before.....................except.........it takes longer to boot up. nothing much to complain about, but its very noticeable. does anybody else notice this?

i believe mine takes longer to boot up. since i can't restart or shut down properly i'm not sure if it taking longer is due to the freeze immediately before and my having to press the power button or what. but it does boot a lil slower. not too much.

i havent had any problems with my iMac since i updated. but then again, i donno if i can notice anything diffrent about it either. i think it runs smooth.

I haven't had any issues, my new iMac runs like a champ after the update. Besides the french word you used to as a description could you be more frank on what happened?

I tried removing it 1.1 and reinstalling 1.0 it did not work me. I'm still randomly freezing up and seeing artifacts. does anybody have any answers why or a fix? Getting kinda frustrated.

That's exactly what's started to happen to my iMac within the last 24 hours.

Very strange as the whole system hasn't crashed, I can still hear iTunes playing and move the mouse. But I can't click on anything or bring up the launcher to try and Force Quit the offending app.

Interestingly, if I have nothing running apart from SuperDuper, it runs fine as I'm currently doing a complete backup which has been running for a long time now without crashing. But as soon as I start doing anything involving a couple of apps, I get a freeze.

I've not tried downgrading to 1.0, but I don't understand why this has just happened today as the update was installed a couple of days ago.

Just checked the Apple Support forums and this problem is affecting lots of people, so if you have an Alu iMac, I wouldn't risk installing the 1.1 update.

The update works beautifully on my new iMac. I think you shouldn't give that advice to people. Let people try it out on their own first. If this software was so poor Apple would have posted a fix by now. Many times things on your computer act weird after updates due to existing software on the computer. Some haxies and beta software react differently.

The update worked "beautifully" on my iMac for a day or so. Now its unusable.

I managed to hang a couple of games before and after the update - no biggy, after windows, you get used to "cycle-power" as the solution to many problems.

I don't have any problem giving advice on this one is don't touch this update with a ten foot pole until Apple addresses the problem! I spent more than 5 or 6 hours working with apple care on this problem and the only solution that worked was to archive and install which I could have done myself without wasting so much time. And the after effects it caused were almost as bad somehow files from my user library got damaged (from crashing numerous times?) and left safari with problems which led to more time with apple care, they are nice people though. So after a few days of this headache the only advice I can give and will is 'archive and install' if your having issues and avoid the update till Apple gives some answers why so many people are having problems.

The update has only been out a week. Apple cant fix issues with the 1.1 update and release it in that time space.

I say SMALL percentage because most people without issues generally don't post good experiences. It would be nice if they would post good experiences because sometimes the forums are not only misleading but a drag because they are being abused and mistaken for bitch zones.

No problems here/ 20" 2.4/ downloaded update yesterday

This Mac has been excellent for the 2 weeks I've had it. The learning curve has taken time, coming from a PC.

I say SMALL percentage because most people without issues generally don't post good experiences. It would be nice if they would post good experiences because sometimes the forums are not only misleading but a drag because they are being abused and mistaken for bitch zones.

HLDan, you are right, people don't usually post their good experiences (fanboys excepted), but will certainly steam in when there is a problem.
However, I didn't claim every new iMac suffered problems of course. You may well have a good one, im not arguing that. But just look in the Apple forums, or any other Mac forum for that matter. These graphical gremlin bug posts are popping up at quite an alarming rate. Certainly enough for Apple to need to sit up, take notice and pull their finger out to do something about it quickly.

On the scale of things, it is a significant issue and i dont think it is such a small percentage that suffer. Even compared with all the other models of Macs. Theres no other gremlins on any other Mac which is discussed quite so much right now, and hasn't been for some time that I have seen.

Whats more, although many peoples iMacs have serious graphics issues, they don't all manifest themselves in the same way. For example, some folks iMacs have dock graphics corruption, but my iMac doesn't at all. In fact my iMac is perfect too, besides the fact it has a fit at the sight of UT2004, which will lock it up within the hour, and sometimes in as little as a few seconds (quite a few other games will do the same). In fact I dont think ive read of a claim by anyone to say that UT2004 works as it should on the latest iMacs. So for all you know, the issue may be laying undiscovered in your iMac too.
Im not suggesting you get UT2004 to see if it happens or not, but you have to wonder and be concerned about what other software you might install in the future (maybe outside of warranty even) which could trigger the problem, if it isnt addressed early on.

Your right, I too want to know why only a few others on the forms are not having any issues after the update? So I changed my mind, everyone who has not downloaded this up should. So you too can go threw the crashs, frozen screens and pretty looking artifacts. I was having a enjoyable experience with my new Imac, nicest machine I have ever owned. But last couple days after the download were rough and I came to the message boards looking for some answers. I found a lot of people having the same problems I was having and no answers so I tried to contribute my solution to the problem. But now I think everyone should download it. The more people who are experience problems now and talk about it might be able to help us avoid problems in the future.
