I don't know. If it helps, great as you don't have to reinstall your applications, otherwise do an Erase and Install.

It finished and is every bit as slow as before. Shoot! Guess it's time to really wipe it out now.

I'll report back after I'm back online! Thanks again for all of the help. :)

If I were you I'd remove that RAM you added before formatting anything and see if performance is any better. Also, make sure you've run full tests on your harddrive and the rest of your system - Techtool Deluxe is quite good if you have Applecare.

If after the full format and reinstall the system is still slow then it would certainly point to a hardware issue of some sort.

But yeah, pop that RAM out...

I'm back up on the iMac, so far so good. It's flying. I hope the wipe out somehow fixes my internet issues too, guess only time will tell.

Thanks again to all who have offered assistance! Much appreciated.

I would Format and Reinstall. And Start over fresh.

I also wouldnt use that HP Printer thing you refrenced earlier since it uses rosetta. The Apple HP Printer drivers should be good to go.

I'm guessing it was a combination of maintenance, growl, widgets ( some of which could have been PPC ) and eyetv.
EyeTV can use up resources faster than Bush can spend money.

Thanks everyone. After wiping it out I left a lot of stuff off, such as growl, several widgets, the HP software (scanning no longer works, but such is life), and a whole bunch of apps.

I haven't lost internet since starting over, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed it sticks.

Thanks again!

What HP machine and software do you have/was the culprit? I have an HP and planning on buying iMac in June and wondering if I'm going to run into trouble. In other words, wondering if I'm in the market for a printer too.

It's an HP Photosmart 2610v. This model seems to be hated by windows users, and loved by mac folk. Or at least that is what I gathered from my google search at the time. Ratings were very low, and I got it cheap on clearance. It worked flawlessly on my g4 mini without the software, but never worked right on the imac until I installed the software. Now that I have not reinstalled the software, it prints fine, but wont scan, copy, or fax.

my bet is that it was probably some random corrupted file that the computer kept trying to access.

To easily end all of those widgets, try this:

Applications > AppleScript > Script Editor and copy paste this:

tell application "Dock"
quit
launch
end tell

Then choose run.

They will all work again once you open dashboard, but you'll have to run it again to quit them all.

U must do this first!!!!!

Install a free utilites program on the iMac called
"applejack" designed by USC or UCLA.
Its great. After U install just restart holding down
S and apple key next to space bar.
when it asks what to do write in:
applejack AUTO then hit return and
go get a beer...come back in 10 minutes and
it will be done and it wll ask if if U wnt to restart.
++++ if its new why the hell not use the warranty
and call apple?
:)
