A few developers have said that there games look better on the Xbox than they do on the PS3. I don't think the PS3 is significantly better hardware wise anyway.

Oh it's significantly better hardware wise. The issue is whether or not the software can utilize it properly.

Once Folding @ home launches for Xbox we'll have an answer. Considering they now have work units that use both GPU and the CPU. Whoever has the most workunits / points in a month wins.

And no, I won't count the 390,000 points I've already accumulated. ;)

As mentioned, Mac’s aren’t good for games.

Ultimately, you want to look at the titles when you decide what to get. XBOX has the most titles. PS3 might have more Japanese titles I imagine because it’s really popular there. PS3 has better graphics but I think the high end XBOX compares pretty good. You need an HD TV to take advantage of this though. XBOX online is some small fee per year. PS3 is free the last time I checked.

If you want the “best” graphics and play with the “best” people on the internet with the “most sophisticated” games, you need a powerful 64-bit Vista gaming machine. Well, any Vista machine can play most of these games but with weaker machines, you may have to turn down the settings otherwise it will be choppy. Dell sells some complete systems and the really upscale ones are from Alienware. And they heat the room more than the PS3. ;) You can buy gamepad controllers like the XBOX type for a Vista computer too. If you have a fat wallet, you can even get low production things like replica Street Fighter arcade controllers. Ppl make a lot of controllers for the PC. But most games are better handled by a keyboard and mouse, especially if you play other people because a “controller” doesn’t have as many buttons and isn’t as quick and versatile as a mouse. There are actually “gaming keyboard and mice” and some are geared specifically for certain games. Someone even made a “customizable keyboard” too, but not sure how it went. Sounds expensive though. Check the Tom’s Hardware forums for specific questions you might have on PC gaming.

EDIT: If you go PC, get at least 4GB RAM with 64-bit Vista. 32-bit will make it limit the amount of RAM you can use to around 3.2 for a 512MB 8800 card and around 2.7 with dual cards.

Pre-builts are for lazy people. But having said that, many of my friends pay one of our other friends to piece their systems together.

I still piece my PCs together and it's much easier to do so now days, because the components have eliminated much of the guess work. I upgraded my original XT's video card, then assembled every PC after that time.

Alienware. *vomits* Overated, overpriced, gaudy looking clones. I recall when they were just overpriced clones.

Check this out for folding;

OK, I'm done rambling for the moment.

If they did I didn't care, but I recall hearing about something this century. Both companies make bleh clones, one brand is just more obnoxious about it.

The only assembled clone I ever respected was Zeos and they're long dead.

One option for value is to use an online retailer like NCIX that allows you to pick and match the components you want, then they will assemble and test it for $50. Sounds almost too good to be true...while I feel comfortable picking parts and poking around inside my computer, I dont know how to build one. Would be well worth it to save my time.

That said, I haven't used their service before..

um from my experience, the ps3 is loads better than the 360. maybe its because i have had to go through like 6 360's in 2 years due to r.o.d

if you want to go pc gaming, dont get a mac, build your own

for ***** and giggles, here is a thread i had on 360 vs ps3
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/574322/

and here is one i had on pc or ps3
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/430345/

hopefully that helps out somewhat op:)

I got a 360 at launch and I've had 3. The first one fell off my shelf when i fell over the ethernet cable and died, and i traded in the repaired one for an Elite.

If you've gone through 6, you're either exaggerating, had an absolute shocker, or you've been doing something wrong. 360's should be treated more like computers, lots of people don't give them the ventilation they need.

Oh and when Microsoft say not to stand it up because it might scratch your discs if it gets moved, don't listen to them. Lying it down only blocks the vents, which leads to overheating, and death.

The Ps3 is very good at being a radiator. But past MGS4, and Uncharted, theres no games worth playing on it. I found Resistance 1 to be awful, not a patch on the original Half Life, or Halo, which some people compared it to.

And lets just say Xbox Live is much better than the PSN. Yes, you have to pay for it, but the service is so, so, so, much better.

Oh wait, the F1 on PS3 absolutely rocks, as well as GT5. (Even though its only Prologue atm.)

I'm not trying to start an argument here, so this is what i reckon.

360 = The best all rounder, huge library of games, fantastic online.

PS3 = For the extremely casual gamer, or the extremely hardcore. If you want to swap HDD's around, and play with Linux. Also has Blu-Ray if you love your HD, but this is still potentially a format that might die out.

I must say though, when i got a PS3, it felt like i was getting a cooler toy than the 360. It just let itself down.

These are similar rigs (the second has a better processor even) and the no-brand is $200 cheaper than the Dell. When you start upgrading those Dells in the site, that's when they charge you a large premium as well, and it will be even a bigger discrepancy than the no-brands. BTW, Acer is considered "branded" nowadays and bought Gateway.

Dell XPS 630 http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=DXCZCF1&s=dhs

CyberpowerPC Gamer Infinity 7512 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883229047

Unless you are really loaded and don't care, I wouldn't go for the $3,000 base Dell XPS 730. Way overpriced.

And USUALLY, when you build a PC yourself, it costs you more with the advantage that you get it customized to your taste. But make sure you do your research and know what you are doing. You can wind up with some headaches if not.

Hardly. The Xbox has a better GPU and more RAM. Both are extremely important for games. The PS3 might have more CPUs but that just evens it out.

This is an article from a developer who programs on both and states the Xbox wins in his opinion.

whats wrong with me saying that, Iam basically saying how do you compare these two products in terms of gaming etc.

How much more plain english do you want!

But they are not comparable products? Mac's are not a gaming plaform, Windows would be a better choice.

How much more common sense do you need.

I own a PS3, 360 and MBP, and I don't expect my kettle to replace my toaster.

In this head to head graphics test it looks like the XBox wins too.

I guess you just have to look it up and hope some people have done real life comparisons. Any manufacturer can boast a whole bunch of claims with this and that processor, etc. etc.

Only commonality between then is they both require AC to operate.

1. they both have an optical drive
2. they both have harddrives
3. they both can run linux :p
4. they both have processors
5. they both have graphic chipsets

need I go on? :p

PS3 Not An Option for Me

Well, I own a 2.8 GHz iMac with nVidia graphics, and it handles all my gaming needs. The PS3 isn't really an option for me, as I have a lousy 24" rear-projection TV (I spent all my money on the iMac :D) PS3's have 256 MB of video RAM on their primary graphics cards, so the XBOX 360 beats it in graphics performance, due to its 512 MB discrete video RAM and superior pixel processing. However, the PS3 can perform about 70-100 more gigaflops than an XBOX 360 if utilized fully, but that hasn't yet happened. Anyways, if you want to REALLY play FPS, IMHO a mouse and keyboard is the only way to go. Also, there is NO WAY that I would buy a Peecee, as Macs run windoze better anyway! It comes down to this: if you want the best computer for your money, get a 2.8 GHz iMac with nVidia graphics. If you have a nice TV and want a gaming powerhouse (and don't own the iMac), get an XBOX 360. If you want superior console build quality, Blu-ray performance, and a CPU superior to the XBOX 360, (and don't own the iMac), get a PS3.
Remember, people, this is all just my opinion, so please don't go hating on me if you don't agree (or if I accidentally made a mistake in my post). :D

I don't think thats strictly true, but the rest is correct.
I would say the only console I wouldn't get while I have a CRT TV is the Wii, even though it isn't an HD console, the whole gaming experience requires a big screen.
I've played a PS3 on a SDTV and it's perfectly fine, I've got an xbox360 and my choice of TV for it is a 32" CRT tv or a 22" 1680x1050 Monitor. The monitor is way better, but I prefer to do work on that.

Anyway, I feel the gaming experience is always going to be better on a console than on a PC (thats counting Macs in there too...) because you usually get more of an immersive experience on your sofa in front of a TV.

However, it all depends on the games you play, and generally FPSs and WoW are the sort of games you should be at a PC for.

Well also, on a peeceee you can upgrade dual video cards, and when Windows 7 comes out, you're supposed to be able to use different makes of video cards. Not sure what kind of upgrade path a Mac has regarding this and whether it's good for the computer.

I have Yellowdog Linex running on my PS3 and for basic computer needs, (video, internet word processing etc.) it's great. I have a Mac for higher end stuff but my PS3 is my main internet/gaming device, hooked up to my HDTV, can't get any sweeter then that.

I don't even know if the OP is even reading these still. Was kindof a while ago, but I thought I'd put in my 2 cents.

I think an iMac makes a great desktop pc. It'd be perfect for an office or even some casual/semi-hardcore gaming. If you wanted to play the latest and greatest games, bootcamp would serv you fine and you could play some great games.

PS3... My brother got one and I am impressed with ONE game. Little Big Planet, haha.

Xbox 360. I have two (One modded), and each of my brothers have one. If you're looking for a huge game library with stupid fun games, hardcore games, media center ability and the best internet play and communication available, then this is your system.

For the heck of it... I have a wii too, not what you're looking for ;)

Basically to sum it up:

What system has the games you want?
Do you have an HDTV or good LCD monitor to hook a 360 or PS3 to, or is that why you were thinking iMac?
Is that screen big enough for Blueray to matter?

That's my advice. I'd like to hear about your setup or what other people have different machines doing though. :D

How many PS3 games support keyboard and mouse? Last I heard it was just UT3.
