When he says written off, I am assuming that the insurance company is callng the car, to use a term here in the states, totaled. Meaning it is a total loss or a "write off" to the insurance company.
I don't know about the S. African market, but in North America and Europe, Windshields are designed like a sandwich -- two layers of glass with a layer of plastic adhesived in between them. The way, when the windshield breaks (you can see lines in this one, so it is broken), the pieces adhere and don't shatter off.... In most North American cars, this only applies to the front and rear shields, and not to the windows in the doors....
When I heard about it, the first thing I thought of was the iMac I thought it was smashed into pieces, as he was taken to hospital with quite serious injuries, and the car was written off
He thought the imac was going to smashed into pieces because he already knew that the guy had some serious injuries and the car was written off.
Its not like he heard there was a crash and thought 'is the computer ok', it was a crash where he'd heard the car was wrecked up and the guy was pretty injured but was ok. The computer thought came *after* all of that.
