The new iMac is great unless you plan on installing Windows and playing this years games. In that case, with the Radeon 4850 512MB, you won't be running any of this years games at native resolution without turning AA off and all of the settings down.

i have that card on the older iMac and i can play cod: waw at full settings, 8x AA, 1920x1200, and it runs fine. arkham asylum runs at full settings as well, and crysis runs 1280X800 2X AA, which isn't bad at all. What were you saying?

I doubt they're sold out....they're probably working out how to price the older gen refurbs now that the new models are available

Exactly. They're back at lower prices. The 3.06 is now $1349. But if it were me, I'd go for one of the new ones.

For some, including me, a 27" is just too large, or not something they want, so they can still buy a 20 or 24 at this time, and I would think that Apple will not discontinue them in the near future. If you don't want or need that large a display don't buy it, but don't whine about it, there a lots of users that want a large LCD screen, quad core, wireless mouse and any other upgrades that the new iMac brings, this is the market that Apple is aiming for. If I were a gamer, or worked on spreadsheets, edited movies etc I would go for one but as I don't I won't.
As for the people who think the got screwed or cheated by Apple because the bought a iMac this year, there are numerous web sites around advising you not to buy unless you really can't wait as they were due for an upgrade.

Some people always find a way to complain about everything.

If a 27" screen is too big for you, then don't buy it. Your 24" iMac is not going to be truly outdated for years. And if you don't like a 24" screen, then buy a 21.5" iMac or even a 20" refurb iMac. And guess what? If you don't like that, then there are 17", 15", and 13" laptops to choose from. And it doesn't stop there. There's even a device called the iPhone for the ultimate in portability.

So let's look at the choices in size that Apple offers today, right now:
3.5 inches
13 inches
15 inches
17 inches
20 inches
21.5 inches
24 inches
27 inches

And you can't find something that suits your style? Puhlease!

Don't forget the 30 inch ACD. :)

The OP could always get the new 21.5 inch iMac to carry it, and then connect to the 24 inch LED display or 30 inch ACD when at home. :D

they killed the FW400 port.

1 fw800? really apple?
FW800 is backwards compatible with FW400 and firewire has this great thing called daisy chaining. Unless you need ridiculously high 800 Mbit speeds for every device, 1 FW800 port will do just fine. Although I hoped they put a FW3200 port on it instead of FW800, but maybe that'll be something for the next upgrade :)

The change from 16:10 to 16:9 is not very spectacular. Yes, right now the 21,5" and 27" are weird sizes and they have weird resolutions but it's not really a big deal. That 27" display is big enough to not notice the difference between 16:9 and 16:10. The 21,5" to me seems big enough to not notice this difference as well but some people might notice. In the end I don't really care, on paper they are great displays with great resolutions and it's not as if it breaks your everyday use of the machine (maximized windows is something Windows and Linux people do, Mac people don't do things like that and it really really really is not something you want to do on a big 27" display :X).

New screen resolutions are daft.

1920 x 1200 and 2560 x 1600 are the standards for a reason.

1st one gives you just enough room to work on 1080p content (title bars above/below etc) and the latter gives you lots of real estate on your desktop, esp for coding (I know because I have a 30" dell at that res!).

iMacs are consumer machines, and consumers want to watch movies and TV shows in 16:9 (or wider) formats.

If you want to code, get a Mac Pro and whatever monitor you like.

(I know there's good reasons not to, but that's Apple's thinking for sure.)

They are SO sexy, and the Magic Mouse is SO sexy, and 16:9 is better for media. Apple is about sexy 99% of the time, and unfortunately, code isn't exactly sexy to the common consumer.

I love these new iMacs. I can't WAIT for the MacBook Pro updates!
