I just noticed my phone was warm and battery much lower than it should be at this point in the day.

Over in the battery screen, I see something peculiar. The Messages app shows 1.1 hours of background usage in the last 6 days, but an entire hour of that was just in the last 24 hours. Meanwhile, on-screen usage is about the same day-to-day. The app was used in the foreground for 20 minutes in the last 24 hours and yet drained more battery than 1.5 hours of Safari. That's alarming.

I restarted the phone, and it is now back to a cool temperature. This sort of flaky background draining isn't something you want to see in a core app like Messages.

Is anyone else seeing something like this?

EDIT: To be clear, I've had the GM running since its release last week, so this isn't a case of Messages doing some initial indexing or analysis.

Not seeing this so far. Battery seems slightly better overall but too early to tell

Yes I'm the same. I didn't have a problem with the GM but now I'm on the official version Messages has drained 64% of the battery in the last 24 hours

Have you been downloading any iMessage apps? Perhaps that would explain the background usage.
I have seen an increase in On-Screen usage for iMessage but that's due to trying out all the new features.

I'm also seeing this! My battery died today from 100% at 8am to 0% at 1pm which is very strange!

Check when charged at iMessage killed it!

60% of background activity
20 min on screen time 1.4 hours background!

Apple need to fix this!

The battery drain is probably the "deep learning" algorithm running in the background, sifting your imessage and email data to figure out how to target you with ads, suggestions, and "behavioral data". If this "deep learning" infringement on my personal privacy cannot be toggled off, I am OUT. Apple has steadily adopted a vision that, I believe, Steve Jobs would have found detestable for good reason. It feels like a company culture governed by ideas that employees under Steve would have wanted for the sake of revenue if they could only have sold Steve on the violations of personal privacy. Now that the gatekeeper is gone, it is Christmas every day for gathering, sifting, and using personal data to target users for the sake of revenue.

I don't know why this has to be said over 100 times in 20 different threads. Battery life for the first 48 HOURS isn't going to be representative of how it will be on your device. The phone is still settling down and you are also probably playing with it more than you would normally because of the new features. Everyone needs to seriously take a step back and relax!

This comment makes no sense.

The official version is exactly the same as the GM. 10.0.1, if you were on the GM, there would have been NO update available yesterday when the release went public.

Apple doesn't use your personal data for ads. It sounds like you are however, accurately describing Apples competition.

That looks pretty strange for iMessages. I wonder if you have many attachments.
I'd probably start with reset settings, then escalate from there.

They tell you that they are sifting your messages and email for data to target wider "service". This would be things such as retails "suggestions" and the like. And you think they are only doing it in the interest of increased service, with no learning and utilization of what they learn on the back end to create new revenue in the background? Puh-LEASE.

Ok, for now, let us not call them ads, but let us call them, "enhanced user experience and retail choices based on location and data garnered from imessage conversations and email data.

Call it what you will, but it is the gathering of information in order to target users with revenue generating data that suggests ways to spend money. That is advertising to me. It may not be the kind one sees on "Bewitched", but it is way more elaborate than "Nielsen" data, and that data was used as the cornerstone of advertising sales and messaging for decades. It is what it is.

Apple makes its money selling hardware and services...Keyword here was sells. How is it that Google makes its money? What is it that they "sell"

If you really feel that Apple is doing these things, you should immediately stop using their products. Go find a device or company that is more inline with your obvious distaste for data mining. Good luck.

That references Apples use of ibeacon type use, no? That comes down to the apps you put on your phone/messenger. Apple is not to blame for Facebook's data mining iOS user data. That's on the individual that downloaded facebook.
Everything I've seen says that any info Apple does mine, is stripped of personal identifiers. That would mean, targeted advertising would be impossible. If you have info to the contrary, I'll gladly read it.

I will accept your very sound advice. Yes, I find a specific degree of data mining to be an unacceptable breach of personal information, particularly imessage conversations and email data, though the "memories" function is also borderline insane for those who care about privacy. I do not know what other companies, such as Google, do with sms conversation data and email content mining, but I am much more curious after this latest OS update. It is too much for my liking. I hope I can turn it off. If not, I may indeed be "OUT".

It seems that a program must absorb, review, and filter complete conversations and email to use "deep learning". It implies that ones personal, complete content is being given a thorough look see. It seems like overreaching to me. This is OS that is using this, as described in the "new features" details of the latest update.

Memories is a great example of what I'm talking about. Apple has not turned on syncing of its new "people' feature, for privacy reasons. Why? It's locking memories and people to individual devices, until they can figure out a way to do it securely. That doesn't sound like a company trying to get your info.

That's again, info that is locked to each individual device. It's nothing more then a next gen secure version of spotlight. Apple is getting non of that info. All device specific.

Data has to be sent out for suggestions to come back. This is why one cannot use these features without a data connection. I would welcome any article that explains how apple does not receive or utilize the user data from "deep learning" technology. I cannot find any, and I think that the one directly implies the other.

Here's the first few results from a google search for the terms "Apple deep learning privacy"

For those with battery issues with Messages running in the background, do you have background app refresh on?

My iPhone 6 Plus shows Messages used 41% of the battery during the past 21 hours, with 1.1 hrs on screen (doesn't mention background for this app). I have 81% remaining battery since I took it off the power cord this morning at 0530 EST. I was spending time in Messages trying out all the new features and looking over the Messages app store.

Someone else at work told me his battery was draining fast on iOS 10 and did not know why.

Craig Federighi stood on stage during the iOS 10 key note and spoke about that, which in turn sparked all sorts of articles.
