So iMessage has been completely destroyed by Big Sur. It does not work and when you do get to log in you have conversations missing and not in sync. The option to "sync" has completely disappeared randomly on its own about two days ago from the preferences settings.

I’m not a fan of the way threads have to be deleted. But my syncing is working better than previous version on old Mac. I’m currently on M1.

The Messages app as a platform for messaging is a F mess. Fragmented features (though almost totally fixed with Big Sur), and the notification bug! 🤦🏼‍♂️

In general I think Apple's back end is not the best (if not completely broken). When iCloud was first launched I lost files. There is a big thread here about iCloud tabs, which I suffer from but I don't consider critical for my use.

Hopefully they'll get their sh*t together one day.

My iMessage doesn't work either, on BS. Could someone explain to me how it is supposed to work please? When I look at my iCloud account, I can see that all the other apps (Pages, Numbers etc) which sync via iCloud, are there and they all work. But why is iMessage not there?

It doesn't work for me as well as it used to and I am also having the same problems.
You can force it to synch still by going into preferences>@ imessage> synch now- it is still there, but frankly it's easier just to close and relaunch the program.
There is definitely a lag on some messages and so yes, they get out of synch and they get through quicker on the phone.
Problems with group messages where one is on Android. I haven't checked lately if that is fixed but that was definitely broken last time I tried.
Also problems with contact photos not showing up.
Mail is also pretty messed up too mind.

iMessage has it's own preferences on synching in the settings of the app itself.

iMessage working fine for me across several Mac's, 2 iPhones with different numbers, and iPad Pro

I have Big Sur on one MBP and Mojave on another MBP and messages sync fine across all

Here are a few thoughts FWIW

1) I have disabled (unchecked) - "Enable Messages in Cloud" on Big Sur
2) I had iCloud storage issues with messages and upgraded storage due to needing more storage for messages ( i keep all my messages for future reference)
3) Had issues a while ago because I forgot to update my new credit card info on my apple ID - messages and updates would not work properly - once the new payment info was verified all the strange issues went away

Not sure how relevant any of this is - just throwing it out there FWIW

iMessage on macOS has never worked properly tbh. I'm on 10.15.7 and have been using it since it came out (like 10.11?) and not only has it never had 100% feature parity with iOS, but the syncing and stability has never been "it just works" level

If I log out and relaunch the app it shows texts from months ago at the top. I need to go into preference and hit sync so it becomes 75% current. The second I close the app same bs happens.

Cook must have hired Microsoft employees.

Not even sure on this one, I have a fairly diverse number of things all using the same iMessage and they all are synced.
If I don't go to the office for a few days then log in it may take 30 seconds to a minute to pull the latest but it's all there.
Like 5 Macs in different locations, a phone, an iPad, a watch.

iMessage has it's own preferences on synching in the settings of the app itself.
I also just noticed that iMessage isn't updating not only on my mini but also not updating on my iPad Pro. As iMessage syncing is set in it's MacOS preferences, what would be the the equivalent setting in IOS?

It’s in iCloud settings.

Also, if you have an iPhone, employee in store told me, and I’ve never had problems since, only select your phone number as send and receive and then on iPhone in iMessage setting, turn on Text Message Forwarding.

In my opinion, too many moving parts for Apple’s “it just works philosophy.”

So, for me, all three devices are send and receive from Phone number. They are always in sync.

Mine were syncing well (iOS 14.4 to Big Sur 11.2) until a couple of days ago after which it seems to have partly stopped. Rebooting the laptop puts it back in sync until, a while later, an occasional set of messages sent from my phone won't get pushed to the laptop again.

I don't know why Apple has so much difficulty with syncing things via their own iCloud.

It took years for them to even get text shortcuts to sync, and that's such a simple thing. Now they're messing up iMessage and Safari tabs etc.. They own the cloud tech. so this shouldn't be hard for them.

Maybe in your case (if it’s only been a few days) it’s because of the iCloud Apple server issues They have been having for the past few days ?

Apple support and system status page

They do currently show iCloud login issues as of this post

Could be, although they've got iMessage in green. I'll keep an eye on it and moan back in this thread if the problem doesn't go away :)

iMessage on Big Sur does not properly sync with my iPhone 12 Pro Max

No matter how many times I sync, there are messages missing

I did an entire reset by logging out of both my Mac and iPhone, changed my iCloud password, restarted everything, logged back in - still missing messages

Plus, the 2-steps required to delete messages and the Archive function being useless

Who would have ever thought we'd long for the days of Catalina?

personally, am not longing for the days of catalina. messages works fine here, in sync with my 12 mini. lately, i text more from my mac than my phone, but glad they stay 'in balance'...
