iMessage issue

So my wife and I and my mother in-law all share one Apple ID. We have for many years, it's never been an issue. We each have our own email and phone number associated with the Apple ID.

Since I've moved to iOS 12, any messages I receive from the two of them (both on 11.4.1) get combined into one thread. In my list of messages, whichever one of them messaged me most recently is the person that is shown as the author of the whole thread, and if I reply, it goes to whoever most recently sent me a message. The only way I can message the other person is to delete the thread and start over.

This has never happened before, just on iOS 12. Previously they'd each get their own thread in messages. My son is on a child account and he's running iOS 12 as well, and has the same issue. My daughter is also on a child account and is on iOS 11, no issues.

I've checked my contacts and they aren't sharing any info. I've also checked both their devices and only their email and phone numbers are checked in messages. Any ideas?

AppleIDs are meant to be used by one person. Your way out of this mess is to put everyone on their own AppleID. You can still use family sharing for apps and media.

Could you post a screen shot, screen record video for ya to better understand? Also just see their settings “start messege with” and see which number it is.. and “receive at”... see if it’s all ticked or not.. also if you tick at one place will it be changed on the other device?

My guess is since you’re reciving messeges from your own devices, because of the same Apple ID in iCloud, it’ll merge them.. Maybe they changed the way on iOS 12.. I haven’t come across this situation, so it’s only my guess

My guess is since you’re reciving messeges from your own devices, because of the same Apple ID in iCloud, it’ll merge them.. Maybe they changed the way on iOS 12.. I haven’t come across this situation, so it’s only my guess

I had a similar issue as I share Apple ID with my wife so all our pictures sync (which is something Family Sharing doesn't do), my solution was simply for her to have her own iMessage Account but we still share the same iCloud account, people mistake them as the same things but they are separate.

In short: Your wife and Mother In Law should have their own iMessage Account but keep using your iCloud Account. The setting can be found under Settings -> Messages

Yes this is a perfect way.. I think the OP can do this.. it’s way easier for him this way..

Also replying to your post.. family sharing doesn’t sync your photos.. but it does get you a shared family album right? But you’ll have to just add it manually.

Is there a way to turn this off so it doesn't combine conversations on my side. I can't force my Mom and Dad to get their own icloud accounts, they wouldn't be able to figure out how to do that anyways. Note that I don't share an account with them, yet it's still combining it on my side of things.

You have to make sure that no Apple ID is used in iMessage. If you have people sharing an Apple ID and it’s enabled in their imessage account then all of their independant chats with you will merge. Of course, if you do this then they lose messages in the cloud and cross device syncing.

It's working like it should. The problem is, why are two people sharing the same ID on two different devices. That's the problem. It was never designed or intended that way. Period.

A lot of people drink and drive. Not the problem of car manufacturers is it. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

One ID per person. It's that simple. One ID with multiple people, expect major problems. I still don't get why anyone does this. It wreaks havoc.

Correct. However, my wife and I want all pictures shared. For example we were now on holiday and took well over a thousand pics between us, individually sharing is a pain. I guess we don't have anything to hide

I got all 3 users to sign out of the icloud account under messages and it is still combining them all into one thread.

I setup my wife and son under separate accounts, turned on family sharing and it’s still merging. I’m afraid I’ll need to delete the threads completely to clear it out, I’m just having a hard time deleting a 1 year thread.

I don’t disagree with you. I’ve been submitting feedback like crazy but no luck. I have at least 6 or 7 betas worth of feedback submitted to address this.
