Can Siri send messages for you when not in a car? It should behave the same whether it’s in a car or not.
I can send Siri messages from my phone. So apparently it doesn’t behave the same way. It’s only in the car that Siri sending and replying doesn’t work for messages

I tested this this morning and I was able to send and reply to messages. I did get a notification that a
message couldn’t be delivered when I first tried, but the message was received. I didn’t get that error on the reply.

I tested it this morning too and it still doesn’t work. Sounds to me that car play issues have fixed in the 7.1 beta you are running but we’re not fixed in 17.0.3

Also tested again that I can use Siri from my phone inside the house or anywhere to send messages. That works. I’ll use that as a work around until Apple fix car play. So weird that Siri works on phone but not in car play!

Did you do phone to new phone transfer? Or upgrade from 16 to 17 not on iPhone 15 pro?

Phone to phone. I upgrade my 12 Pro Max to 17.0.1 and then transferred that to my new 15 Pro Max.

This happened to me as well. I upgraded from 14 Pro Max to a 15 Plus on Sept 23. I had absolutely no issues last year when I went to setup my iphone 14ProMax, all my photos loaded in messages and photos sent to me via text loaded my camera roll. Everything else loaded completely on my new 15 besides messages. They are there but not downloaded. I only have 4GB of messages on current phone and I used to have probably 50GB of texts. I can't search for old texts, or find photos in text message thread gallery. I am nervous to wipe and trade in my old phone because of this...! My new phone is completely up to date as well, was hoping it would be fixed in an update.

@Maxell I am running the current iOS 17.1 Beta 3 and as of today, all my iMessages are finally syncing down from iCloud. I upgraded to the iPhone 15 Pro Max from a 14 and restored my phone from an iCloud backup and all was well except the messages didn't fully sync up. Well as of today it looks to be working again after installing the latest beta OS. As an extra step, I did sign out of iCloud which removed all synced data, and then signed back in and resynced up which seems to have done the trick along with the latest release. So hopefully when the release 17.1 you will get it all back unless you want to jump on the public beta.

This is very good to know. Going to try this!

Interesting. Before trying that, did you try just toggling iCloud messages off and back on? I'm really hesitant with the iCloud sign out option as the last time Apple had me do this I lost loads of settings everywhere and had to sign everything back in again. It also removed all Apple Pay cards and that's a p.i.t.a to set up again.

Update to the above, I just went and disabled iCloud messages, chose 'Disable and Download'. When I then went into Messages everything appeared going back to 2008 thus far!

Good news! I might try the beta but I have read other threads talking about numerous new bugs in b3 and people downgrading to iOS 17.0.3. My car play still will not send or reply to a text message via siri. Siri works for everything else in car play- just not for messages. Wish they would fix this in b3

Did it work without doing the extra step of toggling messages in iCloud off and back on?

Don’t bother wiping it I did that numerous times. Nothing works. Search is broken in iMessage. Just have to wait for a fix. I have 3GB on my 15 pro and 12gb stuck in the cloud also going back years. Does your car play work? Mine does except I cannot use Siri for messages. Cannot send or reply to a message in the car. Very annoying

I don’t know if this is related to search being broken, but attachments I delete keep coming back in the photos search. The messages don’t return when looking at messages, but if I go to the contact and look at the downloaded photos from the person they show up and also in search. If I delete them from the contact/info page, they come back in a day or two. This happens on my iPhone, iPad and MacBook Air.

I don’t know why that is, but it means they aren’t being deleted from iCloud Messages. Basically I can’t permanently delete them.

Find the photo in the text thread (not the photo gallery in messages) and then delete the text above the photo, the photo itself and several text bubbles below the photo. I’ve found that this works. Sometimes and somehow iMessage attaches text to a photo so when you delete the photo it doesn’t go away because it’s only a partial delete. It does mean scrolling back through the thread to find the photo and the upper and lower text bubbles but if you can do this and delete all those, they won’t come back. One extra step is to then go go to the upper left box and where it says Edit, scroll to see recently deleted and delete all those now and permanently vs waiting 40 days for iMessage to do it.

That’s the issue. I already deleted the photo in the text thread, so it’s gone. It keeps coming back in the photo gallery and in search, but tapping that brings me to where the photo was in the message thread, but it’s not there since I deleted it.

Basically Messages seems to keep attachments and message threads separate. I’ve noticed that Messages is taking up more room than there are Messages in iCloud on my phone.

Then go to where the photo was in the text thread and delete the text bubbles above where it was and below where it was. I’ve found that about 4 text bubbles above and below is usually enough. Do that. Then go to edit - upper left and permanently delete rather than wait 40 days. Do this and then wait 24 hours and the photo should disappear when. If you want, you can do the above steps and then go to messages, Siri and search and toggle all those off and then iMessage and toggle that off. Wait a couple of minutes and then toggle Siri and search back on and iMessage back on. This activates iMessage and then your photo should be gone. Try it and see

I think the space issue is because not all the photos and attachments have synced from iCloud to your phone. Sounds like a bit has but the rest is stuck in iCloud until they fix it. The Apple support guy told me that once the fix is done, everything in iCloud iMessages should load to my phone. I’m missing about 12gb that I can see in iCloud but it’s not on my phone

That’s the thing the size of the Message data on my phone is larger than what’s in iCloud. Basically there’s more Message data on my phone than in iCloud.

It’s like deletes aren’t syncing to iCloud or there’s duplicated data on my phone.

I looked at mine. It’s the same. Says there’s more on my phone than iCloud. But that’s just wrong. Let’s see what the fix in iOS 17.1 does. Have to hope it fixes all this. You could try getting the 17.1 b2 or b3 and see but I’m not doing that. I’ve got enough bugs already!
