I turn it on as I have an Apple Watch.

You can have it turned off and the message still show like normal on your apple watch unless you change it in those settings.

Good call. This is what I've been doing too.

Not sure what you mean by this. I want to keep preview off , but surely if you press home button to unlock , you go to home screen , so the message isn't there unless you pull down in notification centre ?
