Thanks for the tips guys. Yes, that was enabled and I just disabled it. I'm still not sure why AT&T allowed me to send the text after having the text plan removed (blocked).

According to AT&T's Support site:

You cannot block text or multimedia messages from a phone number.

Additionally, also from AT&T's site, in terms of pricing for texts without a messaging plan:

Text/Instant Messaging $0.20 per message; Picture/Video Messages $0.30 per message; Web browsing $2 per MB applies to new customers or customers who change voice plans or cancel data plans on or after July 31, 2009, otherwise $0.01 per KB. Prices are valid for use in the U.S. only. Charges for international messages sent from the U.S. are $0.25 for Text Messages and $0.50 for Picture/Video Messages.

I don't think the messages actually were sent, even though it appears that they were.

When I switched from the Torch to the iPhone, the person that activated my iPhone mistakenly removed the codes for the unlimited SMS (family plan) from my line. I spent an entire day sending messages wondering why no one was replying to them. They all appeared to send just fine on my iPhone. I discovered the issue that night when I used my girlfriend's phone to send myself a message. I never got it. I then tried to send her one, and although it showed as sent on my phone, she never got it. So I called ATT and they told me I had no SMS on that line.
