I get charged 20 cents for an ingoing or outgoing message that's not sent through iMessage. It adds up quickly if I'm included in a group text (lots of unnecessary "LOL" back and forth, etc), so I limit it as much as possible. It would cost $20 per month to add a texting plan, and the occasional green bubble message cost is much lower than adding unlimited texting.

I used to wonder why some folks still use 'txt speak' in conversations since we stopped having SMS texts charged by the letter (1c per letter--it adds up fast) once Cingular rebranded to AT&T. It's been unlimited talk/text since 2004 in Owensboro KY. Only Tracfone seems to place a limit on texts.

It was more related to using phones without keyboards and being able to type out messages somewhat quicker using the keypad.

20 cents per SMS message??? What are you on tracfone?!

time to change your phone plan. There are plenty of unlimited prepaid options in the $35-$45 per month range
