Hi all

Set up my new iPad yesterday and noticed that on the reverse there is an imperfection in the finish, it’s not so much a scratch.

Should I return?

I don’t blame you at all, this is $1000+ plus tablet we are talking about, I know some can live with it, and yes it will get beat up with general use, but out of the box it’s just not acceptable at all…

OP,

That is barely noticeable. Most of the time I wouldn't worry about something like that. However, that particular defect could cause the finish to come off over time. I would go ahead and return.
Yeah I hate to feel like I am being overly OCD but with a tablet at this price point it’s very excessive, to have it come like this out of the box is just unacceptable, and IMHO, the more consumers that just accept it the more likely products will come with defects in the future due to apple not feeling the need to tighten up their QC

I hope that the replacement in the Apple Store will not be a chore ... They have stock so on this side it's good but I don't want them to tell me to cancel the first order and order more then ...

You’re not being overly OCD. I would return it too if I had the same problem. It’s unacceptable at that price. Simple as that.

Unfortunately, with mass production products, there are going to be production anomalies no matter what. And your particular defect looks like it can be easily missed unless it is held close and at a particular angle.

It is disappointing when it happens to you. I agree. It is a lot of money and you need to be happy with spending that much for the product. Hopefully, your next one will be fine.

This is the current state of Apple QC. It's very hit and miss these days. It's not a crime to expect a perfect device, especially at the price you paid.

Everyone telling you to return it probably has an Apple Store nearby.. 😀

The shell on mine is flawless (WiFi model). It sucks for people who don’t get a flawless unit, but Apple has great support and will exchange without question during the 14 day return window.

personally - if the screen is great and there are no other issues, I would hold onto it.

If you're having other faults with the device, swap it.

Gotta pick your battles

Not saying its cool to get a new device with a little blemish out of the box, especially since these iPads are expensive, but you'll be miffed if you get an uneven screen and one with more scratches, vs. a good screen now + this thing you don't really see that often. That's how I approach things, knowing I can dig the hole even deeper.

These imperfections is what makes your apple devices unique. On my new iPad I have a tiny dent, looks like a small grey dot. However it doesn’t bother me. I always say if it bothers you then get it swapped, if you can live with it then good, its probably going to get some marks overtime anyway.

My previous iPad Pro got scratches on because of the apple pencil, and I was gutted, but I think its best to live with it, unless you can return within the 14 days then do it.

$80 Amazon tablet doesn't normally come with defects so neither should a $1000+ tablet. Keep returning it until they tighten up QC plus you're contributing to more affordable refurbs for those that don't mind B grade.

It would look much worse if it was a SG iPad ;)
That being said... i would try to return it. Once seen can not be unseen ;)

This is why it’s great to have AppleCare +, express replacements, and a great imagination for “intermittent” faults
