I just received my new 24" imac aluminum today and have been busy transfering my files. I thought I would give my general impressions. I should let you know that I am a recent switcher (or returner from the old Mac SE days).

The original box was huge. Its packaging was a work of art similar to other Apple products. The large white box, handle, styrofoam on the top which contained the keyboard, mouse, and two small manuals.

I was shocked at how large the screen is. It is enormous. Much bigger in my home than it looked in Apple Store.

It is absolutely beautiful. I don't notice any inconsistent look with the aluminum and black. To me it goes together very well.

The screen is also beautiful and I have not noticed any problems with the glossy screen. It is in front of a window, but the window has a semi-transparent curtain and today is overcast.

As a recent switcher, I was blown away by the simple details and elegance of just setting up the imac at the beginning. The rotating box where you entered the details was a nice touch. I have not noticed many big problems switching from the mac. I was able to download important software such as flip 4 mac without a problem. Installing the software is much easier than windows.

One thing that is strange is that there does not seem to be a way to preview thumbnails of images under finder. As I understand it this is a feature of Leopard, but its absence is strange (I did try installing a plugin to allow this).

This machine is great for multitasking and I have itunes, iphoto, Safari, and texteditor running with no problems.

I also have added eyetv hybrid and it works great. The picture is great and I forced it into a 16:9 resolution to take advantage of the entire screen. Very nice. I have not looked at HDTV yet.

Anyways, I will add more as I continue on and perhaps some unboxing photos.

Another tip since you have so much screen estate, hit Command-J, then drag the icon size slider all the way to the right. Usually I apply this only to folders with images inside it, but it looks great on such a big screen and is easier than squinting to see the thumbnail. :)

Completely disagree. This makes your icons a lower resolution, they look less sharp (and make your desktop look very - immature/cheezy IMO). Higher resolution = sharper images, more screen real estate, and a prettier picture.

Congrats on your purchase. I'm not a huge fan of the black bits (especially the back) but having seen one in the metal (and glass) the screen/display is amazing. I really would love a 24" iMac.

I love it, the new Keyboard is pretty slick.

I checked out my 24" 2.4GHz iMac today at Apple Store and I can't wait to bring her home...when Leopard comes out. :(

Congrats!! I made my way to the Apple Store today and saw it in person for the first time. All I can say is "Wow"! The store is much brighter than anywhere I would use it, and the glossy screen didn't bother me at all. The colors really pop, and the resolution is incredible. I'm saving my pennies, cause I Have to have it!! :)

damn i wish i was getting one but my bloody iMac G5 is still going strong. Its 18 months old and working beautifully, i really want one of the new ones. I went to the apple store, looking at the 24" and a huge bright window was behind it, i didnt notice any reflection at all until i remembered all the complaints on this website so i looked for it. i only noticed it when i looked for it. i was amazed with the new keyboard though.....i am still amazed at how good it was. i really, really, really, want one.

i guess posting the performance numbers for the new iMacs would only rub salt in the wound eh?

http://www.primatelabs.ca/blog/2007/08/24-inch-imac-performance-august-2007/

all the numbers are based on the powermac (edit - i thought it was the imac but re-reading i was wrong) G5 1.66ghz which was given a 1000 rating... look at the 5xxx number on the new 2.8! and the overall rating of 3791 == yikes

Canada, eh?
I'm still trying to decide whether I want a 20" or 24". I saw them compared at Best Buy the other day, and frankly the 24" looks huge. From a normal computing viewing distance, I have to turn my head to view corner to corner. I wonder if that would get old fast.

My brother pointed out, "what's the point?" With the bigger screen, I'd just end up bumping up the font sizes and icon sizes anyway, he says (this is, notably, what was done with the store model).

I'd save quite a few hundred dollars by going with the 20", and perhaps put that money toward another 20" display for a dual-monitor setup rather than a singular, gargantuan 24".

What do you think? Would you prefer a single 24", or two 20" side by side?

I don't know what version of OSX you're using, but on mine they aren't even close to 'lower resolution'. They look much better at 128x128

Well the DPI is actually higher on the 20" model. So basically you would be enlarging the fonts MORE on the 20" than the 24".

DPI for 20" = 99.06
DPI for 24" = 94.34

BTW, You'll be turning your head a lot more with two 20" screens than on one 24" screen.

Eh, that's very odd? Where did you get that from!

Yes the resolution compared to the screen size is lower on the 24". If it had been the same then everything would be exactly the same size on both screens.

So while the 24" has higher resolution, it compensates that with the screen size, and then some.
