I bought a 20" before the original 24" came out and I really wish it was bigger now. It is funny how something that looks so big when you first get it looks so small after a while.

I'm still trying to decide whether I want a 20" or 24". I saw them compared at Best Buy the other day, and frankly the 24" looks huge. From a normal computing viewing distance, I have to turn my head to view corner to corner. I wonder if that would get old fast.

My brother pointed out, "what's the point?" With the bigger screen, I'd just end up bumping up the font sizes and icon sizes anyway, he says (this is, notably, what was done with the store model).

I'd save quite a few hundred dollars by going with the 20", and perhaps put that money toward another 20" display for a dual-monitor setup rather than a singular, gargantuan 24".

What do you think? Would you prefer a single 24", or two 20" side by side?

Ha, this is happening to me with my 6-month old 30-inch Dell monitor. I don't have desk space for anything larger, but what seemed ginormous just a short while ago seems quite tame now.

Just for fun

I put the desktop icon size on my 12 inch powerbook up to 128x128 and even like that, everything looks smooth. Hmmm, perhaps I should leave them that way. I would have less room to drop all kinds of crap on my desktop that way... :D

Did I mention that I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of my very own 2.8 iMac? I'm caught up in a full geek experience to the exclusion of almost everything else except my wife and a handful of other things. She just smiles at me and appreciates my excitement even if she doesn't completely share it. :)

I got my 24 inch for home last night

I'm sitting in my office and going through withdrawl myself -- -I love that thing ... HUGE screen relestate -- just waiting on a mini DVI - VGA adapter now ... I have a kick ass 19 inch CRT monitor that i'm not ready to part with -- and it will do wonders for holind extra information i need to refer to when i've got other screens open

I really like having a seperate screen for my charting software and my order entry stuff ... PLUS multiple charts at eyes glance are AMAZING

Yeah. Maybe I'm just trying to justify not spending an extra $500. ;)

I'll have another look in person when the new models arrive in stores here in Canada. Supposed to be another week or two.

Yeah I battled back and forth between getting the 20 and 24. I knew the 24 was going to look a little ridiculous on my desk so I ordered the 20. However, I am a big amateur photographer and TN screens bug me. Between the convincing comments of other MR posters and the fact that I found out the 24" wasn't a TN screen, I called Apple and changed my order to the 24". It cost me $300 more to upgrade. I figured if I plan on having the computer 5 years, that's an extra $60 a year----certainly worth it in the long run to buy that beautiful screen!

You won't be disappointed and it's worth every penny.

I would recommend the 24". First of all the 24" imac is huge, but not in a bad way. I am using it in the living room to watch tv (eyetv hybrid) and movies. Today I used frontrow to watch a slideshow of our family photos. Very slick just like the appletv. I love all the real estate to have itunes, Safari, and other programs open at once.

Every time I look at it, I am just impressed with the slickness of the computer. The glare still has not been a problem.

On an unrelated note, one question from a recent switcher. Can you use the Apple Remote to control the dvd player?

Yes the remote can control the DVD player. Just press the menu button and you'll see a dvd as 1 of the 4 icons, that's the dvd player.

I got my 24 inch imac today. Oh man, I love it. It's so frigging big compared to anything I've ever had.

First computer: summer 2001 indigo imac 400Mhz G3 (I think it's a 14 inch, crt of course)

Second computer: emac (usb 2.0) 1.25 Ghz G4 (had a 17 inch crt)

Third (current) computer: 24" imac (mid 2007) 2.4Ghz intel core 2 duo

It's amazing to see how far macs have come since just 6 years ago.

The only thing I'm slightly concerned about is ram useage, it's got something like 6 gigs of virtual memory being used from the hard drive. I'm considering getting a 2 gig stick when I can afford it.

Aside from that small concern,(not unexpected, I figured I'd need more ram) I have absolutely no problems with my new 24 inch imac. I love it! :D

Congrats on the new iMac!!!

Mine is coming in about 2weeks - which is perfect because I am away until then anyway!!!

I checked out the 24" before I ordered it and I must say it is one of the best I have ever seen!!!!

:)

And BTW, I still use my Macintosh 128k I bought in 1984 when they first came out. When I get the new Mac I will post some pics of the two side by side. The first and the newest of Apple's best!!!
 Damn I love Macs!!!!

update on my perceptions

hi y'all i thought i'd update you

i ordered the 2.8GHz 24" and it arrived on Wednesday morning.

here's a performace report from a lab (which i think i posted before)
http://www.primatelabs.ca/blog/2007/08/24-inch-imac-performance-august-2007/

notice the performance numbers as compared to the G5 1.6ghz... mine was the G5 2.0, but let me tell ya from the last 2 days of usage this thing is like greased lightnening! I use aperture on a regular basis and this thing is easily 5 times faster than aperture on my old box - it used to be like pulling teeth and now it is a joy to go thru my photos!

Despite the gamers complaining about the graphics card, it is mucho better than my old G5

and the glossy screen isn't an issue to me - and i'm pretty fussy about glare.

and the new keyboard is also a joy - already with as much typing as i do at times, i've noticed less stress on my fingers.

i encoded a 23 minute movie yesterday and it was easily 4x faster than the G5 -- and burning a DVD only took about 5 minutes - i ripped off 25 in about 2 hours (i was doing other things so sometimes i didn't swap new ones in right away).

my only complaint so far is really that the darn external monitor plug is different than the G5 so i'll have to buy a new adapter.

you should see this monitor next to my Dell 19" - the dell is 2 years old but looks dull and yellow compared to this iMac screen. I had to set the brightness all the way down because the screen is just too bright.

I bought the 20" model at the Apple store the day they were announced. I am so happy with my new system. I also thought it was nice that Apple provided a free download of IMovie 06. I am a new Apple user, but I've been using video software on the PC for years, and IMovie 08 is very limited.

All in all, I love my new Mac. Not only is it practical, it's fun!

Got the Elgato Hybrid also. I should try it with an HD dish receiver and see if it makes a difference, even though i still have an S-Video and component wiring and not the other better quality stuff.

I have been getting to know the Elgato Hybrid and absolutely love it. You can use the apple remote to control channels (up and down only) and the eyetv software that comes with it can turn on your computer to record a show. Very nice and unmatched with the PC (as far as I know).

It also can automatically convert any recordings right to iTunes in iPod or AppleTv format. Nice!

Not quite unmatched, considering this is the same exact piece of hardware sold under a different brand name for PC's:

Not sure about the windows software though... EyeTV is pretty awesome so it would be hard to beat that.

Yes, the same hardware but the software is far ahead of the pc side. I tried it on my pc before I got my iMac. It was awful. The Windows Software looked like it was about 10 years old - maybe it was...

By the way here are a couple photos of opening and setting up the iMac.

my 20-inch 2.4 GHZ arrived Wednesday, and I got back to use it late Friday/early Saturday. Pretty awesome computer. I don't notice any big improvement over my previous iMac, but I'm enjoying it.

The keyboard I'm actually liking in a way. I feel I type just as fast, and I think anything that is different in the way you interact with your computer gives you a "new" feeling.

Well the DPI is actually higher on the 20" model. So basically you would be enlarging the fonts MORE on the 20" than the 24".

DPI for 20" = 99.06
DPI for 24" = 94.34

BTW, You'll be turning your head a lot more with two 20" screens than on one 24" screen.

Actually, lower DPI will enlarge objects on-screen.
ie: suppose you have an object that is 99 pixels x 99 pixels;
@ 99dpi it will measure 1" x 1" on-screen;
@ 94dpi it will be somewhat larger than 1" x 1", since only 94 of the 99 pixels will fit within 1" on-screen.

24" iMac will enlarge objects slightly compared to the 20" iMac, assuming the dpi figures posted here are accurate.
