Jelly scroll, please? ;) Sorry but there’s simply nothing else to talk about and you guys have covered the hot innovation of the missing charger for the people half way across the world from Cupertino.

What's next, Macbooks not coming with chargers? "Good thing I have this 5W brick!" *facepalms*
I get the point you made, but would like to point out that my 2018 MBP is one of very few USB-C laptops that will happily charge off a generic 5W brick, slow as that may be, instead of just spitting out a notification about not enough power and refuse to start charging.

I don't know if I'm the only one with this problem but my cat absolutely loves chewing up those new braided cables. Never had that issue with the old cables.
Seems like it’s about time to upgrade your cat to a current gen model.

Yes people would in droves go out of their way to drive to an Apple Store for a 20 dollar item to sell online 🙄
I don’t understand. It seems pretty simple to me. Put everything that the item needs to function out of the box in the box. If they need replacements, then they must go and pay for them. Apple will make money on the replacements and customers will have what they need to make the item work when they first buy it. Win win. Just like it is now in the US.

We should be able to get a free charger with purchase. It should be an option.
Yes, that should be the way it is when you buy your device at the store. And if you order one, you have to check what color, what storage capacity etc. you want or if you want AppleCare. There could easily be a place to check if you need a cable. This is something that does not have to be difficult.

That's one heck of a charger, though. Almost the same size as the ipad.

Good to know. Will only be a matter of time before Apple removes the power adapter for all iPads from the box across the world

The layer of dirt on my braided cables must make them more durable!
Glad I got the Space Black M3 with black braided cable.
I don't have problems with the cables getting dirty, but I also didn't notice that they last longer. They are nice to look at and feel more premium though, as long as they are in good condition of course.

They must have trained a special purpose AI just to hassle EU.

When I traveled to Europe (London, Paris) over the summer, I found that USB-C outlets had become practically ubiquitous everywhere I went. Every hotel had multiple USB-C outlets in the room. Several cafe's had them. I didn't need to use a power adapter once.

Given this, it makes sense to me why the chargers are not (or less) needed in the EU now compared to the US.

This is true, but then one might not always know what else is in the outlet in a public place besides electricity.

My advice would be to either carry non-data USB-C cables to charge using public outlets or use your own charger.

I have 8 USB C chargers around the house and that doesn’t count the old 5 watt chargers, don’t need another one.
I barely have any.

I’ve beem a Mac user for too long. 😭. My 2018 iPad Pro came with one, as does my wife’s new iPad Air M2, but I don’t have lots and lots sitting around.

Absolutely no excitement here.😑 I would like an iPad Mini….but I guess it’s not important enough to put an M chip in it? Even an M2 Pro would have been an outstanding upgrade. WTH Apple? You get AI🙄, but no external screen support or Stage Manager? Also no Face ID? Again, WTH Apple? I’ll be passing on this…

Leaving out the charger is just a money grab.

I've had USB devices for many years now. I NEVER recycle a working charger. And I still have to buy more chargers at least once a year, because they keep failing. Apple, 3rd party, doesn't matter. Yes, part of the problem is that my girlfriend keeps spilling drinks on them, and she uses 7 iPhones at once. But it's still REALLY annoying that when I do get new stuff it doesn't come with chargers now.

For context I was replying to someone that said a voucher for a free charger on your Apple account if needed wouldn’t work because everyone would use said voucher because it was free and they could sell the charger etc.

I honestly agree with you just have everything you need in the box. However if they insist on the whole it’s wasteful, then I think you should be able to get the item for free if needed/wanted.

I get we all have old Type A iPhone chargers we don’t use. Type C is a completely different monster and frankly the good chargers are not “cheap”. Yes I have charge hubs and what not but you have to have the right cable and the right output/standard.

Then don’t get me started on things like the Nintendo Switch which is Type C port but non-standard. I fried a switch with a Anker charging brick with a Anker cable and Nintendo’s response was you weren’t using our wall charger so not our problem.

Apple is allowed to provide a voucher or coupon. The fact that Apple charges for it, but doesn't include it in any form, tells you about their priorities.

Good.

Now pass on the savings in chargers, packaging and shipping.
What savings? The logistics of packaging them, shipping them separately to each country, keeping track of them, having inventory available and having staff at stores or to set up shipping of the power brick more than likely ends up costing Apple more than just throwing it in the box as the iPads are packaged for shipping them directly from China.

The removal of the USB chargers is a result of the EU's mandates on waste and recycling, Apple wouldn't have fought them if it was cheaper to not include them as part of the package.

I hate that the prongs on apple's chargers don't fold in when not in use. It's a terrible design flaw on par with the magic mouse charging port (IMO).

Savings?
  • The cost of the charger itself
  • There are 2 types of charger in the EU (and UK) - the 2 pin EU standard and the UK standard (also used in Ireland). Now there's no need for different product lines for any European bound items, simplifying logistics.
  • The box will be smaller as it doesn't need the room for a charger, using less packaging materials. The charger sits under the iPad in the box - I just checked my Mini's box, and I guess the normal iPad is the same. Take out the charger and the box can be substantially shallower, maybe as much as 30-40%.
  • Because the box is smaller, more units can be packed onto a pallet, reducing the number of pallets needed to ship a given number of units, and as a result shipping cost per unit is lower.
Apple already sells the charger as an accessory on their website - all they need to do is ship a few more of them. The marginal additional cost is nowhere near the savings that will be made.

There’s no additional logistics. Apple Stores already sell them for $19 each. Vouchers can be provided for redemption in-store only.

If Apple wants to think differently, they can even make the vouchers valid at any Apple Authorized Reseller.

What about getting users to “think differently” as well?

The cables and chargers that come with my Apple products just end up either going into a box or staying in their original packaging.

Reason for this is because I am increasing using multi-port chargers to reduce the need for power outlets and assist with cable management. Also, I recently picked this up from Amazon.

Maybe the line should be drawn at laptop chargers which still cost a pretty penny at the moment, but I can get behind the idea of more electronic devices not coming with charging bricks (or even cables), freeing users to purchase the right combination of chargers that best suit their needs.

Less waste regenerates, less material used on packaging, only question is - are consumers willing to play their part as well?
