Many times, randomly, people say that their calls go straight through to voicemail... I realize the iPhone does this while on the internet, but it happens sometimes when I'm not on the internet.

My phone was sitting on my desk for a while, not doing anything, the person in the same room did a test call to my iPHone and it did not ring. 5 mins later, we tried again and it worked. This happens numerous times everyday.

Any ideas?

Sounds like cell site issues. This happens on all cell phones. If you are on the EDGE network web surfing then the call will go to voicemail. Wifi allows the phone to ring.

This happens repeatedly throughout the week everyday while the phone is IDLE doing NOTHING....

Do you have it auto download email? If so it could be your problem if your on edge. Set to manual and see if that helps.

I had an iPhone that did this same thing. It would not ring if the iPhone was locked/standby. If it was on and you were actively using it, then yes it would ring. Also if you have a message like "missed call", it would ring while locked/standby.

It seemed the issue was the iPhone had problems waking itself up. I returned it and they gave me a new one.

i have had it for over the return period... Wouldnt this be a software issue? It doesnt happen all of the time. Its random... I guess it happens when its locked because mine auto locks after 1 min. Any other ideas? Plus qould they swap mine out in store also since im out of return period?

legaleye3000:

have you taken this suggestion seriously? if your iphone is set to check for mail automatically, it may appear to be idle when it's actually checking for mail on edge, causing your calls to go straight to voicemail. there is no visual indication that this is happening (unless you're using the mail app and see the status message at the bottom if the screen.

there is no option for yahoo to have automatic check on or off...

go to the Mail section in Settings. the second section there is called Messages and the first option is Auto-check - THIS is where the frequency is set, not in each individual mail account. what does it say there? if you've got it set to check every 15 minutes, this is the source of your problem. once i set this to once a hour, i stopped missing calls.

btw, the iphone user guide can easily be downloaded from apple.com - you should check it out to fully understand your settings menu.

Have you tried resetting the phone.
Hold down the standby button until a slider to turn of the iphone appears on the screen.

Actually what you atw rwfeering to is only if you have a pop account or manually added an email acxount. Adding a yahoo account by using iPhones default yahoo mail setup will make it so the auto check feature is not there because it is push email. So that is not the problem but thank you foe the input :)

Any other ideas? I have reset the phone. I wonder if jailbreaking the phone affected it...?

Have you called at&t? Most of their CSR's are pretty bad, but if you can get through to a higher level you might have some luck.

I had an intermittent Voice Mail problem on my phone (some callers got a 'mailbox not setup' message even though it was) and a higher level CSR found the problem and corrected it.

I've found that on my phone, intermittent EDGE use won't block a call, it just delays it for a few seconds, then the call will go through. (I'm actually very impressed by the ability for it to wait for an interruption)

Also, are you maintaining 4-5 bars of signal while this is happening?

Have you tried your SIM in another at&t phone to see if it still happens?

i have full bars but i have not tries ina different phone because i do not have an extra phone at the moment to test this out.

I had the same issues with three phones...they all were returned. Apple says it is an ATT issue, where ATT says it is an Apple issue.

I gave up with all the problems and haven't missed or dropped a call on my trusty Verizon RAZR.

I know..I know...it is no where nearly as good as an Iphone, but I lost my patience after the 2nd dud phone I received.

If the phone is defective you still have a year warranty on it. Take it in and have the Geniuses have a look at it.

Ha true... But are they really geniuses...? That is the question... :) Hopefully they are :)

iphone sucks

I had exactly the same problem, Had the phone less than 2 days and noticed this when people all over started questioning me why I don't pick up on their calls. I received the phone as a gift so I don't have a receipt or a date of purchase. I took it to the geniuses and they told me it was purchased a month ago, even though its only been activated 4 days ago. So long story short, the piece of **** is in repair for the next 4 days or so. If they can't fix it, they'll replace it with "another unit", which means a refurbished one.....my girlfriend paid for a new unit u a-ss-es! Awesome piece of paper weight. So now I'm without a phone til the weekend at the earliest....and yes the loner iphone program at $29 from apple is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. I knew I shoulda asked for the Nokia N95.

Actually, they'll give you a new phone, not a refurbished one. Even if you had bought a refurb phone and had issues with it, they'd still replace it with a spanking brand new one (did that with my iPod..bought a refurb one, had some scratches on it and the lock wasn't working...they went in back and pulled out a whole new one).

As far as the 30 day/4 day thing, same goes if your mom buys you something off the shopping channel now and doesn't give it to you until Christmas...

14 days is 14 days, 30 days is 30 days, and so on. There is no "statute" or timer based on the minute the box is opened. Apple (or any other vendor) only has the date the item was purchased to go by. They don't have a magic bell that rings or magically stamps the date onto the receipt the minute you break the seal or activate the phone.

If it was a gift, your girlfriend should have given it to you asap, not 4 days before the end of the 14 day period. The receipt she has clearly states the the last day the product can be returned. Or if she did give it to you the day she got it (or shortly thereafter), she should have given you the receipt (no surprise on the cost of the phone anyway), and you sat on it for two weeks before activating, well, oops on your (her and you) part. Apple or any other manufacturer/vendor can't be held liable for people's lack of smarts/common sense.

This tells me you don't even deserve the coolness or simplicity of an iPhone anyway.

Same thing happens everyone once in a while on both my and my wife's Motorola phones on AT&T. Have a decent signal, but no incoming ring, just voice mail notification if the caller leaves one.

Actually they can tell when I activated it. What, I've just been glaring at the "please activate" sign on the phone for 2 weeks? I'm just saying, the apple store managers have some discretion when it comes to the rules and seeing as how they'd benefit from repeat customers (esp from first time customers) they should have replaced my phone.

A gift is a gift, have you ever received your birthday gift 3 weeks early? and if so how did you feel on the day of your birthday? still special?

If my mind, coolness and simplicity are oxymorons. Just wait til your iphone craps out dude.

me too.

I seem to be having this problem too .... my gf was all "I called you 8 times, you didnt answer. yakity yak....." But yet the phone shows no missed calls. As well, last night I got a call at 10pm, and the phone, which was in front of me, didnt ring.

Both times I was in my house with 5 bars, the phone was locked, and wifi on.

I just reset the phone to see if that helps. Anyone figure out some kind of solution?
