Monterey drops a week from today, and I am thinking of installing on day one. Reading lots of threads here doesn't sound like it's a very buggy release, and I'm already on Big Sur—it doesn't feel like a huge shift.

Normally I wait for the first big point update before committing, but I didn't do that with iOS 15, based on the same vibe in the forums, and that has been great.

Any thoughts, yay or nay?

Big Sur was just like every other version of macOS. So Day 1 for me. Really looking forward to it.

I have been running all the betas since the first. No real problems, apart from some third party applications not coming out of quarantine after the first run.
This is easily fixed with
Code:
sudo xattr -d com.apple.quarantine /Applications/[AppName].app

One additional benefit I haven't seen mentioned anywhere is a much faster boot up on my Fusion drive, 16 seconds vs 24 for Big Sur on the same drive.

Thanks for that. It is a nice feature to have. Windows has had that feature as well but it takes longer than 2 minutes to restore.

I saw that video and now i'm slightly confused. I had an issue with Big Sur that I could not empty the trash. So I rebooted off a USB disk and got into Disk Utility. I erased the "DATA" partition thinking that I was dealing with 2 partitions System OS and Data. When I tried to boot again the system would not boot and I had to reinstall Big Sur.

Monterey sounds like it's doing the same thing as Big Sur and in that video he explains that erase all content erases just the Data partition but leaves the OS partition alone.

Is Big Sur doing things differently vs Monterey with it's 2 partitions?

Every couple of years I totally nuke my Fusion drive by going into Recovery mode and issuing the command
Bash:
diskutil resetFusion
, and then downloading and installing a clean new macOS.
I will need to do it this time because the current macOS volume has some errors on it that I can't fix with Disk Utility.

I plan on a clean install on Day 1 as well. However, I have an M1 MBA. I've heard lots of stories of not being able to clean install a new OS like the Intel processor. Weird errors like personalization error and cumbersome procedures to get around those errors are annoying. Have these problems been fixed? Is it really easy now to clean install a new OS on the M1 MBA? I haven't searched yet. Any how-to's?

I want to upgrade on day one as well. But what if an important app happens to be incompatible? Can I still downgrade to Big Sur afterwards? (I don’t mind about files etc., since I have everything in iCloud).

check with the app developer first, see if that app is compatible with monterey...

Bug Sur introduced bugs that haven't been fixed to this day. It is highly unlikely this deterioration will suddenly stop, and Monterey will come with its particular set of very mundane bugs that should simply not pass QA.

Better install Monterey in a year or so, when it has matured and there's ample data on what works and not.

i was fine on big sur, am even more fine on monterey. what 'deterioration' are you talking about, specifically? and are you saying we should install monterey in a year, when the next OS is released?

Don’t do it. .1 breaks a whole bunch of things. .2 fixes the .1 breaks but adds new breaks. .3 fixes .1 and .2 breaks, and adds security and incremental changes. .4 fixes the breaks caused by .3. Go with .4 every time, unless you hve lots of free time or you don’t need the use of the machine.

FWIW - I've been using Monterey since the first beta and found it better / more mature OS than Catalina or Big Sur

I have seen some posts about 2nd Monitor "not working" issues (never had any issues with my 32 LG second screen) - I think those were mostly resolved before the official release ?

Basically feels like a more refined / polished version of Big Sur

Agreed. I have been doing the same thing.
  1. It's secure locked System Volume is more secure than with Big Sur
  2. It's faster. I boot Monterey in 16 seconds on my Fusion drive compared to 24 seconds with Big Sur
  3. The only problems I have been having is with some applications (LyX, are you listening??) not coming out of quarantine after the first run.
Once the final version hits the streets (next week sometime??) I intend to completely wipe my Fusion drive and install a clean version of Monterey. I may partner it with a clean new install of Ubuntu Mate 21.10. Windows 11 stays on an external SSD drive.

About 80 % of people probably have no problems with a new operating system. 10 % have some problems, 5% of big problems, and 5 % have relly seriosu problems. I made up the numbers based on watching this since system 4.
