Big Sur was just like every other version of macOS. So Day 1 for me. Really looking forward to it.
Big sur was very stable at launch for me compared to other macOS releases. Catalina wasn't very good until the .4 release for me I think. A lot of kernel panic crashes until the next spring. To compare, I didn't had a single system crash so far with Big Sur with a day one install.

IMO its a guess. The more logic thing to do is to wait at least for the next 2 major update of the new OS before upgrading because its not as unfrequent that .0 releases had annoying problems. Since I have my iMac pre-installed with El Captain, I had 2 macOS release that was problematic at launch. High Sierra having a problem when opening any videos they putted in quarantine and an accessibility bug that caused apps to crashes, it took a good month to fix it and like I said, Catalina when the whole system was very unstable for months until it was fix for me.

So my advice is, if there's no features you can't wait to try, just wait. For myself, since my iMac is very stable for a good while now and there's no really any features worth it on my late 2015 iMac, I think I'll wait a good 1 or 2 .x updates before installing.

Slamming it on my less often used mini M1 16GB...

Daily driver 2020 i5 10th gen 13" MBP will continue running (plenty snappy & cool on the thermals) Catalina.
