Hows this?

It shows as a Xeon but is in fact an i7-990x

Could you post a screenshot of your About This Mac screen, and preferably the 'More Info' version? :)

Exactly, it even recognizes, but doesn't use the EEC element in the RAM so I did not have to upgrade that immediately. Will put some 1333 in at a later date.

Temp wise its about bang on the same as the W3520 I took out. Under stress test, converting several AVi's to mp4 it climbed to just under 70 with all 6 cores and 6 virtual cores flat out. The converting was done in half the time of the W3520. FCPX is much much faster, scrubbing is beautifully smooth and I can now preview video in Lightroom 4 in realtime.

Overall, if it gives me another 2-3 years out of the machine, its a great investment.

Nice ;) So it's the i7 equivalent of the W3690?

It will work in the 2009 4,1 and 2010, 5,1 single processor machines only. For it to work in the 2009 model you must change the EFI to the 2010 model using the EFI flash tool at Netkas.org. Its a very simple job.

Um ... pardon-moi ... which Mac Pro's is the Intel 990X Extreme compatible with?

Thanks.

^^^Hammer forgot the "-E" part otherwise correct. If that's what you are arrogantly hyper-nit-picking.

I guess that depends on whether Hammer was referencing the processor we're focusing on in this thread, or the one mentioned by Tesselator... thanks for pointing out my arrogance so arrogantly. :D

Apologies to Hammer if I misinterpreted his comment.

I was going to upgrade my 5,1 2.8 quad to the W3680 3.33hex. But is this the better way to go due to the cost? Or, better to spend the extra $100 for the Hex? Just don't want any "gotchas" down the road by getting this chip.

Thanks.

Another one: $350 now.

Dang shoulda bought this one. Looks like many vendors are dumping their old inventory. (heh 3.46 hexa-cores for everyone)

I just happen to be googling "mac pro 990x" this evening.

URL removed as yeah - it seemed too good to be true.
