I think it's great because you can run PC games on them. That was the archilles heel with Macs in the past - they just weren't geared up for gaming.

I have a PC at home and an Intel iMac at work. I'm sitting here with a credit card in my hand waiting for them to put a decent graphics chip in the iMac so I can sell the PC on ebay, have OS X at home finally, but still be able to play PC games.

I wish they'd hurry up! The ATI Radeon X1600 is pants!

I had some vague paranoia that post-Intel, the idea of a 'Mac' would die. It'd just, underneath, be a PC with Mac OS X. I imagined a quick slippery slope where Mac OS X became some BeOS-like curiosity running on grey boxes that would slowly die off as no one would see much point in serious development.

I was wrong - Intel Macs feel just as much like Macs and PPC ones and the clamour for 'Mac OS X on generic PC' seems to have died down. Apple are still the hardware-software integration specialists they always were and life has continued happily.

Ultimately, Mac OS X is so darned nice that Apple can be Intel and let you run Windows on Apple boxes without any fear whatsoever. That's a triumph of innovation over mere market dominance.

It just seems all my arguing that PPC > x86 is now all for naught :p I like the prospect of games, but I want more of them to be ported to OS X, rather than installing Windows. I really have no intent of installing Windows, at all. I'd feel dirty.

Yeah, was a case of "If you can't beat them..."

But, I love the G5. I love it's name. It sounds so cool.... especially the Gee Five Quad.... hmm... lovely :)

For that reason alone I will ALWAYS keep my beloved Quad. The best PPC Mac ever made...

But I will welcome a Mac Pro that will inevitably replace it as my main machine.

I really don't miss the PPC. I "switched" to Mac for the first time last summer, when I bought my MacBook. Until that point, I had been playing with G3 machines, and upgrading and such... I think the fastest I owned was a 1GHz G4... that was a processor upgrade in a G3.

Until the MacBook, they just didn't seem like a "real" machine that had much "usability" as a primary computer... just toys that were a fun hobby.
