Interesting perspective on Apple and the pro music world

I stumbled upon this today. It speaks to the doubts that I have, shared by many as well.

Although not a music pro, I have channeled my musical spirit with Macs since 1998.
There are functioning PowerCenter and Umax Mac clones in my basement, a dual-boot G4 (OS9 and OSX 10.4.11), a Mac Pro1,1 running Mavericks, a 2010 MPB that's still going strong, and a 2012 Mini (which was purchased while waiting for the 2014 version, expecting to have buyer's remorse upon release of the new model).

Tinkering has always been part of Mac fun: adding new more powerful drives, XLR8 and Giga cpu accelerators, and such, thanks to OWC. I've considered buying an older Mac Pro to upgrade, but at this point, I have a significant investment in TB devices.

The next few months will be very revealing for Mac users. In the meantime, I've looked at various Windows computers, all very appealing, but just couldn't through with purchase, such is my appreciation of OSX.

Strange to consider that Apple is now like Big Brother...

It's because Apple knows that they can make compromises the average user won't notice, but will still be happy to buy because Apple's presentation and marketing are still pretty good.

There aren't enough "prosumers" to keep Apple happy, especially now that they're a hugely-established brand who don't feel the need to stay competitive as much as they used to.

And the advice I had given would-be installers — wait a few weeks to validate an OS — is proving to be wrong. In this case, you would have had to wait three years, then install that update on day one just to solve chronic showstopper problems with the whole audio system."

This is exactly why it's not worth it to hold off updates anymore. There is no stable version of OS X these days.

Sierra, has had some bug fixes for pro audio, for example fixed a long standing issue with Native Instruments Traktor and audio dropouts from their sound cards.

I have a current problem though with another sound card that's now not recognised on my MBP usb ports, the cmpany is talking to Apple about the problem.

One of the biggest issues is the new os updates every year, a lot of "pro" audio companies, just can't keep up with the changes made by apple

a lot of every kind of company cant spend half of every year reworking and re-evaluating their offerings and re-doing their development to to chase the revolving door of changes that Apple keeps shoveling out while also maintaining backwards compatibility (something Apple doesn't even always bother with).

After deciding to update to Lion back in the day, I had 6 volumes of SL spread among 3 Macs and external drives. That's how important SL was to me. At this point, I'm down to 3 volumes, one of which still gets occasional use.
 
Honestly we're reaching a breaking point soon (if not already) where no matter how much I love Apple (plus the ingrained bias from my history with making music with Apple products), it simply becomes too costly / irrational / abusive to justify sticking with them.

The sad part is there is no good replacement option, but certain Linux distributions even with all of thier problems look better all the time.

For all the loyalty, love, and support we've shown Apple and the Mac platform, it's such a giant kick in the balls to see them neglect, abuse, and outright abandon us like this.

Apple didn't kick users in the balls....Apple rip it....and put the Mac Pro users in the underground dungeon.

The real nagging question is IF we wait and IF Apple does a new Mac Pro, is it simply going be more of the same as the 2013 Mac Pro (their computer, or at least their design, for the next 10 years) that has caused many to leave the platform completely?

That idea is convincing me that hanging around is just an exercise in futility:(

Well Jim, apple forgotten about us users....very wicked of them...but hey...their loss.

I understand the thread starter very well. It took me 3 months to make my decision. I was very afraid I would regret the switch to PC and say bye bye to OSX. Now looking back I dont understand why I didn't do it sooner. It has hardly been anything I missed and I even have to admit its been a bit refreshing with something "new".
THe only thing is that I care little joining windows forums and talk about it the same way as I do macrumors and such sites :D Theres really nothing to talk about, its just an OS there to serve my purpose. Thats about it.

I'll miss Final Cut and Logic, but I can still use Ableton Live, and on the whole, my system just seems a bit more responsive with Windows 10. I can use whatever GPU I want and don't have to worry about the OS supporting it.

Only downside is Windows doesn't like the fact my firewire sound card has unsigned drivers. Quick google search and it's all fixed :)

Exactly.

Here's the deal.
Apple sells more iPhones in a day than they do Mac Pros in a year.
They just don't care anymore.
iPhones have huge margins, computers, not so much.
I wish Apple would sell the computer biz to somebody who still cares about it, instead of letting it rot away.

The issue is with users like you, that act like if Apple is "fooling" those consumers and selling them cat meat instead of bife. Users like you don't understand the basics. You don't understanding that having no dGPU and having way more battery life, slim/sturdy/light/cooler (as in celsius) design, makes a much better and enjoyable machine for the vast majority of the population.

How many of us sent an email to Tim asking him to update the Mac Pro and remind him of how many years we were loyal to Apple and their products? I did back in April, never got a reply and nothing has changed. I don't think they forgot, there just aren't enough of us to care about anymore. They have their iDevices and services (for now) to keep their biz going.

As I have read in online articles, they aren't concerned about where the market is now as much as where the market will be.

It's just mobile computers now....macbook pro.........
EDIT: I used to email him and currently spamming twitters about it, which results nothing.

"Compromises the average user wouldn't notice" are exactly what things like having no dGPU are.
 
Loyalty to a company is like loyalty to a sex worker that you patronize. If you keep paying, you will likely get something in return (assuming your business is desired), but your "loyalty" alone will get you almost precisely nothing.

OK, technically, companies attach a dollar value to the "good will" that they accumulate, e.g. through the recognition they have invested in their brand name. They will try to preserve that when it's profitable to do so. In a different post, I made the claim that Apple is letting the 'Pro languish exactly because it doesn't cost them much to have it sitting around, while it preserves a shred (increasingly small) of the good will they have accumulated with earlier pro users.
