Just as bad or worse than what would happen if you were writing to a tape. So no point there.

But one has of course another tape set. One does not lose everything. He was saying one backup drive was OK.

Actually you'd have two back ups. One in the computer itself and one in the external hard drive.

Also do you always make two identical copies of tapes for every back up? If not you'll lose data anyway.

Anyway my original solution was to use two back up drives. Alternate between them if needed. So if one blows up then the other will be unplugged.

My argument is only that tapes are not better than hard drives for back up. How you choose to back up using either method is not part of the argument.

Yes, I know you said two backup drives. I was only referring at what the oher poster said.

But if you zap a computer you have a non-negligible chance that both drives will be corrupted. If you have another backup you have the option of losing something in exchange of not having to pay and wait for an expensive recovery (which is what most home users would choose).

It you have really important files that you can't lose, then you really shouldn't even be using a HD or a Tape drive. You should be storing it at online where there's a lot of data protection.

Again, the hard drives will not be totally corrupted. Plus if you have two back ups then both don't need to be plugged in at the same time. One might blow but the other will be fine.

The chances of both hard drives being damaged to the point where they need professional recovery are about the same as the lightning setting your desk and all your back up tapes on fire :)

Actually googles backup system is made up of thousands of redundant ATA hard drives. I don't think they use tapes at all. Nor do they even us SCSI.

I think its specs need to be in line with the macbook's, and give them both dedicated graphics

Buying the same components in bulk would definitely help the price...

Agreed, and makes monitors cheaper.

I'm a big fan of rsync, personally. It's what I'll be doing if I can afford to shove a PCI IDE card and some hard drives into yonder PMG4. That and some creative croning is about as good as I think I need.
