Did Microsoft make IE for Mac good or something? Because it is terrible on Windows. (Compared to Chrome at least)

I don't think they even make IE for Mac anymore. It uses too many Windows specific features for it to port well to any other platforms.

There is one good thing I will say about IE 9 and 10, it's probably one of the fastest, smoothest browsers I've used. Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Opera, they all show the occasional chunk on my machine, specifically while scrolling. Chrome in particular has this bad habit of freezing while it loads up background scripts.

IE 10? Consistently and perpetually smooth. Pages load quickly, scroll smoothly, and render decently. The only reason I don't use it as my default is due to how it displays plugins like Lastpass. No handy clickable icon for IE. Oh no. You get an entire bar taking up way too much space. Kinda defeats the purpose of it's minimalist UI.

Do any major sites support HTML5/CSS3 only? Even reddit uses an old-as-heck layout that renders on every broswer known to mankind, and that's a major techie site.

Careful you're not getting caught up in the "latest and greatest" hype. And if you are, you should probably switch over to a PC where you can get the newest core CPU's the day they're released :p

According to a report released on 30 September 2011, 34 of the world's top 100 Web sites were using HTML5 – the adoption led by search engines and social networks. (Source)

And that was a year ago.
HTML 5 is a huge advancement, and every browser in 2012 needs to include competent HTML5 support.

...which IE does. IE9 supported the then finalized HTML5 specs, and 10 supposedly and allegedly has better support for it than the current versions of Opera and Safari.

I never said they weren't. All I was saying is that how much does HTML5 support truely mean? The top 10 websites that use HTML5 (google, yahoo!, etc) support browsers that don't support HTML5, so while it may make for a more pleasing browser experience, it's hardly a necessity.

Much like a 7 hour battery life and retina screen are hardly necessary if you're surfing on your couch. Do you need it, or is it just nice to have?

Can't really make a comparison between a retina screen and a browser can you?

Retina screen -> extra $750 for the pleasure
Browser -> Free for a better experience

I may have come across a bit too strongly - IE9/10 aren't bad browsers, just there are much better options out there.

You may as well have something that can support the full features rather than one that can't, no?

EDIT: From HTML5 test:

Still better options out there.

As a web developer, I beg you, don't use IE. the UI may be sleek, but under the hood it's a nightmare that wasted millions of hours of debugging.
If you must use IE, at least fo it with chrome tab plugin

Not that I am not satisfied with Safari, it's just that Internet Explorer 9 for Windows has become my favorite browser because the UI is so simple and it is just plain awesome. The UI literally takes almost 1/4 less screen real estate over Safari.

Then why not Opera or Chrome or Firefox? Most modern browsers use a pretty minimal UI now.
