It still doesnt matter what number they assign it; irrelevant in the grand scheme. Idk why it matters if its 10.0.2, 10.1 or 10.89. The numbering means nothing.

I think this thread killed brain cells its no nonsensical.
I'm sorry, but if they numbered it 10.89, it's mean Apple were fkng drunk when numbering the update.

Exactly, it was an example how ridiculous it is complaining about what number the update was assigned. The fact a major feature was added a few days after iOS10 released it all that matters. It didnt take until December to get the Plus camera feature they showed off.

I'm hoping for 1 or 2 new features for all devices when beta 2 of 10.1 comes out. #DarkMode

this intentional nitpick is beyond real.. & comprehension. almost as bad as the "planned obsolescence" crap too many believe.
As someone who works in the tech industry and reading your post, i must say, if you think companies DONT plan for products to "fail", then you are living in a bubble. Apple doesn't want you to keep their products longer than 2 years, and now it seems 36 months.

Just go look at the printer industry, PLENTY of documentaries proving it's not only VERY real, but VERY well documented. Same with the lightbulb industry, and every industry.

Amazed at how many people missed the point of the topic but just resulted in personally attacking me. Really speaks to how toxic people can be.

By the way, OCD and Autism are not insults and have nothing to do with version numbers.
Nobody is missing your point, chrf097. Most of us, I suspect, simply disagree with your fundamental premise. If it was an accepted wisdom that x.1 updates must inherently include some new feature, then sure, but I don't agree that this is true in the first place.

This particular scenario, where it looks like they plan to have .1 ready within weeks of the .0, only further diminishes any expectation we might have about new features. It's way too early in the OS lifecycle to expect anything but bugfixes, and using a minor release number to indicate that a showcase keynote feature is shipped seems entirely reasonable.

Unrelated: Comments about OCD or Autism are really uncalled for, that's uncool guys

And that's why so many people have all kinds of Apple devices and other devices for years and years that still do the job for them just fine.

Apple are probably also working on 10.0.2 to fix any early bugs, and this is a longer term release for which they've produced an early beta, in which case the version numbering makes perfect sense. If they made it 10.0.2, they'd have to wait until the new portrait feature was ready for release before they could release a bug fix version

It added portrait mode for the iPhone 7 plus, a major feature. This is also the first beta so likely that subsequent betas will include more fixes etc.

I get that but apart from that 1 feature it should at least have more than just bug fixes so much could be changed on ios 10 to make it amazing just seems like a.1 that doesnt have anything new

you should make a list of all those amazing things and send it to their feedback website.

But it does, the iPhone 7 Plus Camera update. No doubt further bugs will be fixed etc as the beta progresses. This is only the first beta of an update that won't be out for at least a month or so.

Considering that iOS 10 GM has so many bugs left to fix and visual features missing and 10.1 hasn't fixed any, for now I think we can say it's horrible as the post title suggests. Let's see how it turns out as more betas come out. Let's hope it won't be as unfinished as iOS 10.0.1

I have zero issue with 10.1 only containing a single new feature (portrait mode for 7 plus owners) and I own a 6...

Imo portrait mode is a huge thing which definitely justifies the Apple calling the update 10.1 (I can't believe I'm discussing the semantics of version numbers here). In a world where most pictures end up on social media and are viewed on tablets and smartphones, portrait mode brings smartphones (at least the 7 Plus) almost on par to a DSLRs. (Of course when you look at pictures more detailed there is still a huge gap between smartphones and DSLRs).
For me portrait mode alone would be a real selling point of the 7 Plus, if it wasn't for the sheer size of the device.

10.x updates are updates which introduce new features. Portrait mode is such a feature.
10.x.y updates usually only include performance enhancements and bug fixes. It's likely we see such an update before the release of 10.1.

So I see nothing wrong with Apple calling the update 10.1. Besides this is only the first beta of 10.1. It's likely there are still some UI tweaks coming, though I wouldn't expect any huge new feature.

This whole iOS 10 update has been brutal since the betas. All the whiners have been in full swing since they adjusted the beta schedule. "Apple isn't releasing betas like they normally have" and now "They are numbering it wrong."

Like many posters have stated, who cares what they number it or how its released. Fix some bugs, add major upgrades if you want and release it.
