iOS 11: all old photo will be converted into HEIF or only new one ?

I've installed official beta and see that all my old photo saved into my iPhone are uploaded again into iCloud.
That meanings that iOS 11 is converting all my photo database into HEIF format ?
Or the new format will be apply only to the new photo ?

I think they only make change with photos taken by iOS 11.

I'm asking because seems odd this syncing all my photo database after iOS 11 was installed.
Thought that a conversion from JPEG into HEIF format is in progress ...
I've also to say that my huge 32.000 and counting photos (that before iOS 11 was in sync) are syncing really slow.

I have exactly the same question.

My entire iCloud Photo Library (about 20.000 photos) is uploading since I installed the iOS 11, almost 1 week and very slow.

Maybe it’s a bug. But it’s progressing actually. I have about 5000 photos left to upload. Do you think they’re going to be converted to HEIF?

Is it only has progress when you charge and lock your device ?

Yes. I also can continue the progress, if I resume manually. It’s definitely eating the battery very fast and iPhone 7+ is getting quite warm.
I always leave uploading during the night and try also during the day when I’m home.

The thing is, I saw the difference neither in the iCloud storage (it should be already significantly less, right?), nor in the photos meta data informations, (they’re still JPEG).

It may only happen as they are completely uploaded for your device and in the cloud only after iOS 11 is released. Agree good news, though.

I don’t see such full re-upload, albeit I only have 2500 photos and pictures in total.
Maybe because my device does not support HEIF anyway and no device will support it anyway. (iPhone 6s plus)

It looks like it supports only the iPhone 7 and iPad Pro only right now.

I’m pretty sure they would give us a choice, I certainly don’t want all my photos converted as I still like .jpg format better for now.

My iPhone 7+ on iOS 11 public beta did a respring then when it came back it had zero photos. Then redownloaded all of them (12,000) from iCloud I assume. So weird.

Not only they will not change the file format for existing content, new pictures will only be encoded in HEIF on the iPhone 7 and later.

I believe it's only new photos, but this isn't a valid test, as exporting converts them back to jpeg.

Old photos are not going to be converted. Apple will probably move to converting people's iCloud libraries at some point, but they won't rely on the users device to do that.

iCloud Photo sync loop is a confrmed bug.

No, that would be awful. Converting a compressed format into another compressed format is bound to result in the loss of information.

Thanks for the information! My iCloud library is still uploading, but only 400 photos left, so it’s not looping. I still hope, it’s going to be an adjustment of the storage.
