I would think not using CarPlay until it is supported or backing up to a previous iOS (i've never done that/ don't know if its possible) would be the only options until then.

FWIW... if you do not own an Apple Watch on watchOS 4, this is very easy to do.

Just google the
Thanks for the information on this!

Curious how the OTA update will work in the 17 Maxima. Will it pull the update down through our phone or satellite connection? Not sure, but I hope that I don't have to take it in to the service department for this.

yeah she said that it just happens... no notice or need to bring the car into the dealer... Hopefully this is what happens because I would also hate to have to bring my car in for this

Just want to throw in my .02 -

It seems to me that most if not all CarPlay problems are coming from those that have fairly new cars that had CarPlay from the factory.

I have aftermarket CarPlay units in both of my cars (Alpine ilx-007 and JVC KW-V820BT, 2010 Honda Civic SI and 2000 4Runner Limited, respectively) and have never had a single problem.

Car manufacturers seem to have major problems with infotainment system reliability.

A bit off topic, but I have a 2011 RAV4 (base configuration) I was thinking about upgrading to a CarPlay sysyem. Did you install it yourself, or have any issues or hassles with the install or use?

(Stock stereo, no Bluetooth, no steering wheel controls and not JBL system in my model currently.)

In the Civic, I did not install it myself. It came with a 350 watt, 9-speaker audio system w/subwoofer from the factory and I didn't want to mess with that...I figured I'd let the pros handle getting it hooked up correctly which they did. Somehow they worked their magic and all of the speakers and work as intended from the factory, including the subwoofer.

In the 4Runner, myself and a buddy of mine made an attempt but we ran into a few issues. It's actually really easy to do, but the 4Runner had two different hookups for two different wiring harnesses in the dashboard and I bought the wrong harness and plugged it in...after hours of trying to figure out what I was doing wrong, I just threw my hands up and said "screw it, I'll get it professionally installed". When installer told me where I went wrong, I definitely had a facepalm moment.

Both units work very well but I highly, highly prefer the JVC unit. The Alpine unit isn't bad, but it does not have bluetooth. It only has CarPlay, AM/FM radio, and an auxiliary 3.5mm input, and the touch screen doesn't respond near as well to inputs as the JVC unit does despite the fact that the Alpine touch screen is capacitative and the JVC screen is not. The JVC unit has CarPlay and Bluetooth and I can switch between the two interfaces at will. It also has far better audio tuning controls. Both have inputs for aftermarket backup cameras, if that's your thing. I prefer to "reverse in the analog" ;)

If you have any other questions feel free to send me a PM, I don't want to hijack the thread!

My 2017 Volt has worked perfectly. Don’t know if this applies to other Chevy/GM models.

In my case iOS 11 has broken music and audiobook playback after making or receiving a phone call. The media plays but without sound. The only way to get the sound back is to pull the lightning cable from my iPhone and plug it back in. This started with dev beta 10. I have an engineering case open at Apple. I suggest that everyone with CarPlay issues on iOS 11 should contact AppleCare. Let’s deluge them with calls so they get on this and fix the problems ASAP. I drive a 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Limited Edition.

I also have the exact same problem. Same car also. The work around is to use Siri via the speaker key. You won’t be able to control the audio sounds because the unit still thinks you are still in a phone call.

I own an iPhone 7 Plus and a 2017 Nissan Maxima.

CarPlay worked like a charm on iOS 10.3.3, but ever since I updated to iOS 11 it’s been a bad experience.

It either doesn’t connect at all, drops connection constantly, or if it does stay connected for more than a few minutes, refuses to charge my phone. I use an official Apple Lightning Cable, so thats not it.

I’ve also tried resetting network settings, resetting my car’s audio settings, and turning Siri on/off. No change.

I also downgraded back to 10.3.3 and it went back to working normally, so it’s gotta be iOS 11.

Anyone with any ideas? I’m stuck on iOS 11 now because I updated my watch and don’t want to send it back just to downgrade its firmware. I hope there’s a solution out there besides waiting for iOS 11.0.1.

Thanks!
I own 2017 maxima and had the same issue after iOS upgrade to 11. Nissan says it is Apple issue and new iOS should fix it. The only workaround I have found so far is turn off Bluetooth. Good luck.

My CarPlay in my 2017 Maxima mysteriously started working again. I travel a lot so I wasn’t able to pinpoint exactly why but I think it started working again after the most recent update iOS 11.0.3 However, I did notice that the CarPlay settings in the Maxima where it says “Automatically Start CarPlay” were set to OFF and I don’t believe that I had turned it off. And once I turned it back on, it started working again. So, I would recommend definitely checking that. Occasionally it connects slowly or has to be tried twice to get it to work but for the most part it has been working fine again. All I know is that I’m very relieved!

We have a Cadillac XT5, and iOS 11 broke CarPlay for it. I definitely think this is an Apple issue, not a car OEM issue.

Just throwing out suggestions (I have an aftermarket Alpine deck). Have you updated your phones to 11.1 yet? (that fixed a lot of bluetooth and USB/lightning connectivity for a lot of people that were broken by 11.0.x).
I'd also try deleting your devices from the list of known devices in the deck and doing the setup with each of them again.

11.1 made things worse for me and my wife. Both our vehicles now have issues with CarPlay. I had the 11.0 beta installed before it's release and never saw any issues. 11.0 release made it a little flaky, but not too bad. 11.1 totally killed it (along with some apps that don't work correctly now, some very important apps...) 11.1 is a mess in my opinion.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm looking for anything that would help. Would love for either Apple or my car maker to own up to this issue (I feel it's Apple...) and announce it's at least being worked on.

I hear you. When Apple broke my connectivity to my original Hyundai deck with 11.0.2, they said that Hyundai needed to fix the problem. (it's a 2011 deck, supporting some pretty old USB and bluetooth standards...it hasn't seen a firmware update since they shipped it). So, there was no chance of it getting fixed by Hyundai (or Modis, their subsidiary that makes it). Funny enough, found they had fixed my woes in 11.1 when I was on my way to have the deck replaced with an Alpine CarPlay (iLX-107) one...still pulled the trigger because I figured buying a system that only supported CarPlay paints Apple into a corner.

Hopefully you're able to get a patch for the CarPlay software or iOS 11.1.x fixes your issues!!!

Everyone having issues should be reporting this to Apple - the more the better!!!

I have a 2017 Honda Accord and for the past year that I've had it, CarPlay happens to work/not work on random versions of ios that are released. I might just end up not updating my phone once I hit another version that won't cause this problem.

I said this in another thread and I know it's phone and car dependent but 11.2 beta has really helped with my carplay issues and seems to be working very well.

I just had a chat with a Nissan support specialist. She said that Nissan is currently testing iOS 11 (testing is not complete) and so iOS 11 is apparently not supported yet with CarPlay in the Nissan Maxima 2017. They did not give any recommendations, but I would think not using CarPlay until it is supported or backing up to a previous iOS (i've never done that/ don't know if its possible) would be the only options until then.

With respect to CarPlay, there is no such thing as supporting one iOS version or another. CarPlay runs directly off your device. The car screen is just a display, and there is no OTA update for CarPlay.

That being said, the phone-car connection (whether wired or wireless) is for the manufacturer to implement, and in the case of bluetooth it is possible for there to be a bug in iOS or the car's software that creates issues.

My 2016 Volt having awful connectivity issues lately and carplay is practically unusable. But sometimes the screen just goes black a minute after I start the car and before I connect the phone so it might just need an update.

Yeah some of the early Pioneer CarPlay decks don't support BT connectivity at all

Had to replace my iPhoneX, tried to setup the new one repeatedly and can't get wireless CarPlay working with my X and my Alpine ILX-107 deck. I'm guessing the culprit is 11.1.2, as I've had absolutely no issues with 11.1 previously (don't think I had an issue with 11.1.1 either, but not 100% certain).

Going to see if I can't downgrade to 11.1.1 to try to resolve this (then upgrade after the fact).

Edit: Problem may have been introduced in 11.1.1 in actuality. Downgrading didn't help. (trying to do the initial setup where you're connected over Lightning/USB, but select to use Wireless CarPlay) - wouldn't work. Managed to do the setup wirelessly over Bluetooth, but only by selecting the Alpine's wifi network after pairing...before the pairing timed out. (pretty clunky setup). There also seems to be intermittent breaks in the audio while playing music now. (wasn't on my prior device that would have been setup with 11.1).

Edit2: Did the upgrade to 11.1.2 - still works and still has intermittent gaps in the audio. Hopefully we see some improvements in 11.2.

We have a 2017 Genesis G80 and a 2017 Kia Sportage. Very similar radio/headunits. Since iOS 11, we both have to unplug and replug constantly. Either it doesn’t cannect or it seems to just stop working. No error messages. I have a new X (I’ve tried stock IOS and the beta) and my wife has a 7plus with stock iOS 11.1. Very frustrating!

Sorry you're having troubles. That stinks. I have a 2017 VW Jetta and iOS 11.1.1 on an iPhone 6, and my CarPlay works fine. I don't use bluetooth with it -- I USB in. Not sure if that helps debug any.

seems to be problem with bluetooth/usb or the way iOS11 works
try turn bluetooth completely off (in setting) before connecting usb cable. Otherwise, update the head unit

I have a Pioneer X8650BT on my car. It used to work fine with iOS10. The other day I updated my 6S to iOS11 and it stopped working completely (plugged cable in and nothing happened). Problem is solved by updating the head unit's firmware (took freaking 8 hours)
