Never have I regretted updating an OS more than this one. Battery wasn’t great but it wasn’t this bad. Can’t see what or where is causing it though. Anyone else on the 5S noticing at least a 50% decrease in battery life. Had I been using any games it’d be 75% I’ve no doubt. Couldn’t even think about using any apps other than phone text and email anyway. But that’s draining like mad

My 5s battery is going fast. I can't really pin that on upgrading to 11, however. I knew that it was starting to go when I upgraded to iOS 10 last year! Upgrade to 11 did not affect that downturn significantly, as far as I can remember. I am ready to replace the battery (don't need to upgrade to newer phone, waiting for the SE 2 :) ) Replacing the batt is much cheaper than replacing phone, thanks anyway.

(My 5s was new in spring 2015, so about 2.5 years old, near 650 charge cycles)
If I use it for much during the day, it drops to less than 30% by mid-day. Less than I used to get before 11, but the battery life improved noticeably after I last upgraded to recent 11.2 beta. Not huge difference, but I get an hour or two more.
I think it's one of those YMMV points, eh?

SE 2.... nice thought. Regards to battery, it was better with 10. Only upgraded this week and every day has been the same. It’s definitely made a huge difference. Previous updates have usually improved or stayed same. Battery was average prior. Really torn about upgrading to 7 or 8. Thanks for your input guys

I would suggest bringing it to the Apple store and they can check the battery health for free. If that’s the issue, you could get a battery replacement. It would be cheaper than replacing the whole phone.

If you don’t have an Apple store near you, I think there’s a couple apps that can check the battery wear.

5S here also. I had the same issue after updating to iOS 11.1 from 10.2. Battery was draining like crazy. I was getting 1 to 2 hours less usage time.

I restored 11.1 on my 5S using iTunes and set up as new. Battery is now the same as it was on 10.2. I suggest you try a restore too.

It's a shame downgrading is imposible or I would go back to iOS 10 in a heartbeat. On iOS 11, even scrolling down in some apps like Twitter is now choppy when it used to be buttery smooth, apps take longer to open, animations are choppy, it's just worse all around.

I've got a store nearish, can check that out. Do they replace while you wait, if it's needed?

I can't use iTunes on my MacBook Pro.... won't update and won't accept phone. Long story.
I'd probably go prior to iOS10 as it goes. I had nightmares with my phone app always freezing and wouldn't go from keypad to visual voicemal or missed calls, Always froze. Be good if this one doesn't do that. Also the text notifications always show number not contact name, even when stored in phone. Never got rid of that bug ever. So prior to 10 for me, ideally.

It's mad that people on the 7 and 8 are also losing battery life

I’m not losing battery life on a 7+ and the 8 never even had iOS 10 so I’m not sure what it could be “losing” against.

It’s definitely unfortunate you had all those issues. Hopefully you’ll get satisfaction at the Apple store.

I have two 5s on ios 11b4. On one the battery drains like crazy, on the other battery drain is normal. The phones are 4 years old, bought in 2013. My take on the 5s where the battery drains like crazy, it's the battery and not the software. But as @Feenician said, it's unfortunate you have these issues.

Well if my 7 Plus has issues with battery drain and lag what chance does that poor A7 chip inside the phone have? It’s planned obsolescence. There’s nothing that can be done except wait for Apple to fix it as you can’t downgrade now.

From the guy who brought you such hits as, “the home button delay won’t be on the iPhone 8 because planned obselescence” (it was and is) and “iOS 10 is much better than iOS 9 because, um, planned obsolescence?”. You have sub zero credibility.

Not to mention that Pixel 2 and essentially Android (since that's what it runs) somehow has "zero issues".

And yet despite all of your posts the people with he 7 and 5s are never ever going to get back their performance of iOS 10. This is the reality of it.

As far as iPhone 8 goes, that wa s before I realised that the iPhone 8 was a mid range phone.

I ignored that post in that thread because I thought you were talking about the display issues on the XL which were not there on the Pixel 2. Obviously the software on both phones have bugs but having used it it’s definitely a better optimised OS than iOS 11. Just ruined by a sub par display.

Interesting how you know the future. Kind of like with iOS 10 people knew the future about frame drops and all that supposedly never getting addressed or changed...only to treat iOS 10.3.3 as some example of perfection. Also interesting how everyone has these supposed issues, when not everyone has all of these kinds of issues and/or doesn't have them to the same degree as some others.

So basically opinions are basically facts until someone realizes something down the road and conveniently revises their opinion and deflect earlier statements. It's just not how objectivity works, subjectivity on the other hand, that's a different story.

And yet despite all of your posts

My posts, nor yours, have any bearing on the software on people’s devices.

Given that you yourself have said, many times, that iOS 10.3.3 ran better than any release of iOS 9, how are you coming to that conclusion?

Better still, answer this question clearly: In a world where you are determined that Apple institutionally implement “planned obselence” why is it that the 5s, one of Apple’s older devices, even that point, would run iOS 10 better than iOS 9? Can you answer that without wrapping yourself in a mobius loop of anti-logic? Even if iOS 9 wasn’t a high point, why would Apple increase its performance when it was already several years old?

Erm, ... anyway!!

Also takes lot longer to switch on and ..... why does Bluetooth come on every morning I switch phone on. I switch off after it’s charged before I go to bed. But Bluetooth comes on with the phone and iOS 10 and all previous, once it’s off, it’s off, regardless of switching on and off. I only put Bluetooth on when I need it.

How exactly are you disabling Bluetooth?

Disabling Bluetooth the way I always have and never had this previously. Only since iOS 11. It’s not a big deal turning it off every morning but why now and never in all the years of previous iOS. Turning off from control centre or otherwise

Regards battery yeh sure it may help to have a new one but it’s only gone this lousy since updating. Coincidence?

So what exactly is "the way you always have"? Is it doing it from Control Center or is it doing it from Settings? For example, disconnecting from control center isn't the same as turning off in iOS 11, as the earlier posted support page from Apple explains.

It's the retarded decision by Apple on iOS 11 to make the Wifi and Bluetooth toggles in Control Center only disconnect you from the network/paired device rather than turning off the radios like it always did and should be. It also automatically reconnects at 5am every morning. You now must go into settings every time you want to turn wifi or bluetooth off for real.

This new functionality pretty much makes these toggles completely useless for me.

The answer to that is in the article I linked. Basically wifi and bluetooth are, now more than ever, used for things other than being actively on a wifi network or for data or connecting to a Bluetooth accessory

“Apple” said:
In iOS 11 and later, when you toggle the Wi-Fi or Bluetooth buttons in Control Center, your device will immediately disconnect from Wi-Fi and Bluetooth accessories. Both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth will continue to be available, so you can use these important features:

  • AirDrop
  • AirPlay
  • Apple Pencil
  • Apple Watch
  • Continuity features, like Handoff and Instant Hotspot
  • Instant Hotspot
  • Location Services

Shares the fastest mobile SoC bar none with the iPhone X... and it's a midrange phone? If only the home button responded .000000000001 milliseconds faster, I suppose...
