iOS 15 has been criticised as boring and unimpressive, fairly consistently since it's been released. But two things hit me about it this week that made me think it's actually one of the best releases ever:

1) Android 13 announcement, took sooo many things from iOS 15 that we all thought were boring, it just showed actually how far ahead iOS 15 actually was.

2) By my own calculations, iOS 15 seems to be have required fewer updates than previous versions, suggesting it's actually been a pretty solid release. Next week, iOS 15.5 will be the 12th version of iOS 15 released. By contrast, iOS 13 saw 18 releases and iOS 14 saw 16.

We keep asking for Apple's quality control to get better, but at the same time complaining when iOS isn't completely overhauled every single year.

Many of the people who want Apple to put quality control first would say they prefer not to have yearly huge updates. They care about a bug free experience instead of new features.

That said, for a company of such huge resources, it is inexcusable that they cannot constantly release new features and provide a bug free experience at the same time.

There simply is no excuse.

The whole range of software version 15 and watchOS 8 are nothing more than an exercise in proving that Apple do not use their own software (especially Siri on HomePod) and they are incapable of releasing decent code that just works.

Absolute garbage.

Bugs introduced from the very first version still not fixed. Beyond pathetic and absolutely unacceptable and inexcusable.

I like iOS 15. Every year the same pattern emerges that towards wwdc, the software quailing ramps up and gets exponentially better. This year isn’t an exception.

I mean it's unbelievable, but it would seem that has to be it -- that Apple execs and employees never use their own software. Like, wouldn't Tim Cook and Craig F be annoyed by the same problems? And they could just tap anyone on the shoulder and make them fix it? But then what do they use? Pen and paper and rotary phones? ?‍♂️

I am absolutely convinced that they don’t use anything more than the most basic features. For example there are HomeKit delays affecting everybody especially when using HomePod. This was introduced with iOS and audioOS 15 last year. Still no closer to being fixed.

One of the headline features from the year before which was hand washing: on the watch you would get a notification when arriving back home as a reminder to wash your hands. This feature was completely broken with iOS 15 and watchOS 8, it affects absolutely everybody around the world with an Apple Watch and has still not been fixed.

The long-standing UK dictation issue, well they aren’t going to give a crap about that in Cupertino because it doesn’t affect America. You can guarantee that the issue would’ve been resolved if it did affect the USA.

I could go on. But I myself am bored of typing the same stuff and there must be many people on here who are as equally bored of reading it.

Edit: don’t get me wrong, I know these things aren’t necessarily easy to fix. But surely when something has been fundamentally broken in a new release it should be a priority to get those fixed before fannying around with new features?

How should Android 13 get more new features when it does already have a lot, a lot more than iOS?

iOS users look at quality too and the quality is very bad. Since iOS 13 it’s like not even Apple is using Apple devices. Or just opening Safari, settings and say: „It works. Release that update“

I also think a lot of people have no idea of the complexity of creating code such as this. Everyone's devices are different in terms of what apps and how people use them. Sure quality is important and there are some surprises with some of the bugs but what a job and until the millions are using it not all the bugs come out. Also, I suspect that apps cause some issues.

And yet iOS 15 is the most buggiest, frustrating experience I’ve had since iOS 8. (Edit: 9 was a fix for that 8 disaster).

iOS 15 is not boring… it’s effing infuriating.

My experience says otherwise.
I think it’s one of the worst iOS versions ever. I installed it on one of my iPhones (the guinea pig) and it wrecked it. No way I’ll install it on my regular daily iPhone

#1 Android is implementing similar features because they are good, that doesn't mean that iOS is ahead in terms of features than Android is, because it isn't
#2 iOS 15 could get a hundred updates but still perform poorly on many iPhones

iOS 15 is a let down that introduced features after they became basically irrelevant. No credit where none is due, Id have been happier by sticking with iOS 14 if it had Private Relay and Hide My Email and I wasn't so confident Apple would sort out their mess with time, but oh well.

I don’t think just counting the number of updates is an accurate way of determining how bad the original release was. This could’ve been because of Apple actually had a proper development team working on iOS 14 fixing the bugs.

iOS 15 was the absolutely worst release of iOS I’ve ever used and I’ve been using iOS since it had the skeuomorphic design. Android is more stable than iOS 15 when it came out. My issue isn’t with any of the features but it was so buggy that it was not ready for public release.

Agreed. Strongly. Been saying the same thing, it's really as though the devs don't even use iOS and macOS anymore which is so bizarre.

I bet they’re all using Android and Windows. ? none of my Green Bubbles ever complain about their cell phones, and I’m legitimately scared of getting a macOS device because my Windows “just works just fine”©

I partially agree actually but mixed bag

Experience has been fine 15.1 and 15.1.1 on my se2 and 12 pro
15.4.1 is a battery obliterator on my se1 and iOS 15 didn’t feel right on my mini 6 I tried temporarily and it went back for other reasons my mini 5 is staying on 14.3 indefinitely

15.1 is nice on my 11 inch m1 iPad Pro though

I’ve had very limited problems on my end. I think it’s great!

sorry what features exactly did IOS 15 had that older Android Firmwares didn’t have. I own a iphone 13 pro max and before that a Iphone X but been on Samsung Phones before all of that. I can tell you Samsung Android firmware is way ahead from IOS and majority of the google default android firmware and at times it appears apple always copies what Samsung firmware does. Hell Samsung firmware is usually has more features than latest default android os.

As for IOS 15 other than Universal Control it has been the messiest firmware I have ever experienced . From application freezing, to random lags on a Iphone 13 pro max, from Icloud (app based) crashes. IOS 15 is literally showing what happens when Apple Firmware Developers working at home don’t put much effort since the pandemic.

More features doesn’t necessarily mean better.
Yes, they have more features, 99% of people I know who own (or owned) a Samsung mentioned their phone being a lagging mess after anywhere from 6 to 8 months. But hey, it has more features!! I remember seeing videos on YouTube where the iPhone 7 Plus would completely blow the Note 9 out of the water in terms of performance. No wonder they need 16 GB of RAM, they can barely handle themselves

i still have my old galaxy s8 working pretty fine , I really don’t care about peak performance when majority of people at max will use it just for calls text, photos and videos and youtube

We haven’t had any significant issues with 15, currently on 15.4.1. Battery life is outstanding and nothing else but minor annoyances that occur with just about every ios. What I have noticed, especially with ios 11 and 13 which were disasters from the get-go, is that because newly released devices - iPhones - have to be released with the new software, the ios is released even though it is visibly buggy. When ios 11 was released I had the latest iPad Pro and the screen was blurred upon installation. Yet they released it that way, I also got the new iPhone that of course came with that software and had terrible issues with basic functions - launching the camera just got a black screen, no way to use the camera. That’s pretty basic but was fixed with 11.0.1. 11.1 fixed most of the visible issues but it wasn’t until 11.3 that it became a functionally stable release, for us at least.

That marketing pressure to get the new device released on a specific date regardless of whether the ios is stable is a problem for all the manufacturers. 12 was quite good upon release on our devices as was 14. 15, other than certain Safari syncing issues sporadically reported here and on other forums, has caused no issues of serious concern with us on 5 devices. Many issues, with all devices, tend to be specific to certain users. As Steve Jobs said - “don’t hold it that way”:) That was with antenna-gate on the iPhone 4s. I didn’t hold it ”that way” but I had that issue when I did. Putting a case on it took care of that. Not all issues are so easy to resolve. But other than 11 or 13 which were universally bad I haven’t seen any release ever that didn’t generate multiple complaints (posts). Posts about battery life have popped up with every iOS ever released, many within 2 hours of the initial release. Those always get a chuckle. After a decade and a half of owning iPhones (I still have the very first one) the one certainty is that not everyone will have your issue. Many don’t use the device in that specific way. It doesn’t mean that you are not having an issue just that many others are not and we’re happy about that.

I disagree. On my 11 Pro it still kills the battery (got the phone last year after iOS 15 was released, it was and even back then) way to fast, not comparably to iOS 14 or 13 (or 12).
There are still bugs present introduced with iOS 11… And many Accessibility features are even removed or broken. It’s clustered with bugs and performance is pretty bad as well. Good to know that it’s ok on your most recent iPhone, but really, that’s to be expected…
iOS 15 is garbage. Could I downgrade to 14 and take Private Relay and Hide My Email with me I would instantly.
