Let’s list the car makes and models supporting the new CarPlay in iOS 16, perhaps listing them alphabetically by Make - Model - Release Year - New CarPlay available since (X):

I think you're a bit early with that, we won't know that for months.

Yep, I got so excited about it that totally missed this “Vehicle announcements coming in late 2023” bit!

But if it is coming “in late 2023” we should be having iOS 17 by then, so why excite people now for nothing? 🤷🏻‍♂️

It will take another 15 thousand years for car manufacturers to come up with support for this type of CarPlay.
That multi-screen configuration looks like it is intended for the Mercedes Hyperscreen. So maybe it will arrive there in one of the first implementations?

When did Apple launch support for the extra screen for navigation? Like 7 years before it w
as available to 0,001% of new vehicles.

Dumb question maybe...? But what will CarPlay look like in current vehicles with iOS 16 - same as it does now?

I don 't see it changing for current vehicles... it's possible that with a firmware update some of the features that Apple wants to include will be made available to them... but with the safety concerns, etc, I don't see this coming to current vehicles in any significant way. Apple will need to work with the manufacturers to develop and tune the APIs (both ways - car software APIs and Apple APIs)...

It looks good, and created a buzz, but that's all it will be for quite some time, IMO. Look at how few manufacturers are supporting Apple's "key" feature - and compared to the sweeping CarPlay changes, those changes are extremely simple.

It must actually be quite tricky to implement for car makers. To start with, most are quite bad with their infotainment systems. Then there are CarPlay and Google Auto to cater for on top of that.

Interestingly, Zollotech, in his iOS 16 Beta 1 video, talking about the new Car Play, says that this is what Apple’s Car project might have been all along, that is for Apple to get more fully integrated into vehicles, rather than making their own car. Time will tell…

I love Carplay but its not always reliable. It does not always work when you want it to.

I am not sure if I want it controlling features of my car, not to mention m wife would probably kill me if I said I want to buy a new car just so I can upgrade my Carplay.

What issues do you have? It's nearly flawless on my Ford Ranger (SYNC3) and my wife's Ford Edge (SYNC4).
I don't have wireless carplay in my car its wired. Car is a 2021 Honda CRV Hybrid.

1st I have gone through about 11 cables since buying it. I plug in and no car play.

Second sometimes I get in and plug in (even with a new cable) and I have to reboot the Honda navigation system to get Carplay to work again.

Other times I can be driving and the system just freezes up or goes away.

Now i am not sure if the issue is the hardware, software, the honda navigation system (which is ANDROID based) or what. I have taken it to the dealer and they blame Apple. Apple says to check with the dealer.

My wife has a Kia Sorento and has simular issues, with her biggest problem being the system completely rebooting as shes driving.

If Apple is going to make a system that controls many functions of your car, those functions need to be there and work 100% of the time. If they can't then it is a giant safety issue.

This is interesting. I've had a few different cars with CarPlay and have never had any of these problems, even with nonstandard cables. The only problems I've had have been with sometimes-janky wireless adapters... but even those bugs have been ironed out lately. CarPlay itself, however, has always been rock solid.

I had a Ford Escape with SYNC3 that had some of these issues... all were resolved with a firmware update from Ford (SYNC).

I get the concern relative to your experience, but again, at least in my experience with Ford and their SYNC software, the issue was totally car manufacturer related. As I stated previously, both my 2021 Ranger (wired CarPlay) and my wife's 2022 Edge (wireless CarPlay) work perfectly with CarPlay.

While problem resolution for this stuff is simple (unplug/disable CarPlay and revert to the auto manufacturer's in-car infotainment/information system), the kind of issues you are experiencing is why we won't see the announced CarPlay updates (2022 WWDC) any time soon... there's way too much work to be done by both Apple and the various car makers for find and squash all of the potential issues.

I predict the 2025 Honda Odyssey (redesign) will support a subset of this.
Doubtful that Honda goes all BMW i7 or MBUX Hyperscreen or even Grand Wagoneer, but I can see them using the gauge cluster and infotainment to stay competitive with the Kia Carnival...

Kind of similar situation, on my Nissan Maxima(s) - multiple including 2017, 2019, and 2021 - they're all borked.
USB-A and USB-C.

My wife, however, has had zero issue with a 2019 Honda Odyssey - literally it's the same natty/nasty cable that's been in the car since December 2018. It's fraying, has a kink where the sliding cubby is... no problems. At all...

My CarPlay in my Toyota RAV4 is rock solid. One thing I discovered through trial and error is to use an original Apple lightning cable for CarPlay to avoid hiccups.
I was using a third party one, initially, for the sake of a darker color.

I can second the original Apple cable observation. My case was even stranger. With my CarPlay setup, I have been using Apple’s Lightening > USB cable in my car, plugged into a USB socket. It worked fine for months and then stopped out of the blue one day. Swapped the cable with another original one - all went back to normal. The strange bit is that I can still use that “faulty” cable in another car to charge my iPhone.

I know it was a “Sneak Peak” but it was very surprising for Apple to announce something that is probably 18 months away. Do we think this will be in new cars only? I’m looking at getting a Mercedes EQB and this multi-display CarPlay would work perfectly on the double screen but surely it could be implemented with an over the air update rather than requiring completely new hardware?

Won't hold your breath. I think we won't see this anytime soon since car manufacturers have to implement this.

Agreed, I think this will not come to many cars. How many support Carplay navigation info on a second screen which was introduced 2-3 years ago?
