Dumb question maybe...? But what will CarPlay look like in current vehicles with iOS 16 - same as it does now?
It looks exactly the same as before. Literally zero changes that I have seen thus far.

I had hoped based on the preview that at least a few of the UI/UX changes might find their way to the new iteration. Some things might change slightly as we move through the beta cycle, but I would expect nothing significant.

This struck me as one of the strangest announcements Apple has made. Obviously OEM systems take a long time to develop and their devs need the framework to build this kind of integration... but the way it was positioned was so vague as to be almost useless. Underwhelming even though it's an impressive technology... and will be meaningless to the grand majority of people whose cars don't have such immense, immersive screens.

Now i am not sure if the issue is the hardware, software, the honda navigation system (which is ANDROID based) or what. I have taken it to the dealer and they blame Apple. Apple says to check with the dealer.
As a follow Honda owner (2020 Honda e): It’s not Apple.

The Honda infotainment systems are in a special league of their own. I’m not quite certain whether the dealer, the infotainment system or the app is the worst part of my experience as a Honda owner, but the infotainment system certainly takes the prize for being unbelievably craptacular.

Well, from what I have understood from the presentation, Apple were saying that the next generation of CarPlay should also find its way into the vehicles that already support it. Further, it should be able to use the already existing panels in the cars to display this new info. This is what got me so excited in the first place, but of course, it will still need to be implemented on the car-makers side. Something like this…

This will require integration similar to Google's Android Automotive (https://www.volvocars.com/intl/v/connectivity/infotainment-page).

While cars have the displays - and the processing power - most don't have the "hooks" into/across the whole system (including the ECU) for bidirectional communication with a third-party (like Apple).

Our (2019) Honda infotainment uses Android 5.1 - it's specifically noted in the version info.
Your Honda e is way more advanced - or it looks so - compared to my car.

The Honda e infotainment system is Android 8.1 - so newer, but hardly current. It's fairly clunky and unstable.

Honda definitely hasn't figured out infotainment - never has (going back to my mid-2000s Acuras in the USA) - and until they dump it and do like Volvo/GM/others do... it will continue to be crap.

Then again, BMW took a major step back - following in VW's footsteps - with iDrive 8... removing buttons and slowing down the UI (not to mention their asinine gauges) - has pushed me away from the brand.

I don't have wireless carplay in my car its wired. Car is a 2021 Honda CRV Hybrid.

1st I have gone through about 11 cables since buying it. I plug in and no car play.

Second sometimes I get in and plug in (even with a new cable) and I have to reboot the Honda navigation system to get Carplay to work again.

Other times I can be driving and the system just freezes up or goes away.

My wife has a Kia Sorento and has simular issues, with her biggest problem being the system completely rebooting as shes driving.

If Apple is going to make a system that controls many functions of your car, those functions need to be there and work 100% of the time. If they can't then it is a giant safety issue.
On our 2019 Chevy Trax, it's been ok for a while, but it used to act up occassionally. And not even always right after updates. It would charge but not kick in CarPlay. And rebooting everything almost never worked. I would come out of work or home after being there, and it would just work again.

this sounds more like a manufacturer issue. I have had 3 different hyundai cars since 2015 and carplay has always worked flawlessly. Last year i leased the 2021 hyundai sonata with wireless carplay, sometimes the carplay would boot me to the homescreen while driving even though music will continue playing in the background. 2 months ago hyundai released a update and fixed this problem.

Try contacting honda to see if they will fix soon. Im assume they are with how many vehicles they sell every year

as per above (maybe?) - the irony is that my Honda (Odyssey) and Porsche (718 Boxster) work great.
My Nissan/Infiniti are awful - audio is scratchy (Siri and phone calls, not music); Teams literally crashes/reboots the system if someone even tries to call me when I'm away. I had to remove the app.
I've also gone through dozens of cables...
Sad thing is that it's the same issue across 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022... Like Nissan doesn't care.

The cars with the Expanded CarPlay will still need an OEM display. They can't expect all buyers to have iPhones. The manufacturer then has to make a two screen display that is compatible with Expanded CarPlay. Considering how long it's taken just to get regular old CarPlay in most all new cars I expect there will only be a handful of luxury cars using the new CarPlay, and probably not until MY24 at the earliest.

But many cars (MY2023/2024) have multiple (gauge cluster and infotainment) displays. Luxury cars - BMW, Mercedes, Jeep Grand Wagoneer, Porsche, Genesis, etc. - have three or more displays.

"Compatible" will be easy - that's why Apple has so many people on the project/program. The POC use case has already been in flight with Android Automotive - Volvo/Polestar, Honda, GM, and many others.
