I don’t get it. What was there so profound that it couldn’t run on the original iPhone X?

My iPhone is still getting the update but I really expected iOS17 will come to all models running iOS16. That’s what a rumor claimed two months ago

Why do you have to have the latest IOS version? It's not like 17 is going to be some revolutionary leap like iOS 5. If your phone still runs well, why not just wait until you're ready to upgrade?
Security. It's not safe to run outdated vulnerable iOS version.

Edit: there are security updates still going on for the older iOS versions.
Thank you all for the clarification.

It obviously is not about hw capabilites. It's about planned obsolescence. They gotta to make some money from people upgrading.

But honestly 6 years worth of upgrades and support is pretty good score.

, the ios 17 page is broken, but here it lists iPhone X but not the 8 or XR. (edit: it now states XS/XR, now but I wonder how I got that..)

I’m not so sure if that’s the case.

Apple provides security updates for older phones, they released new one for iPhone 6S last month - https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT201222

Of course, it’s probably not going to be as secure as a new iPhone, but definitely far from “not safe to use” label

You don't need the newest iOS version to be protected from security vulnerabilities. Take the iPhone SE 1, 6S and 7 as examples. They both cannot run anything beyond iOS 15, yet Apple keeps offering security updates for them. The most recent security update was iOS 15.7.6 on May 18, 2023. 7+ years of security updates is pretty darn good if you ask me.

For those on the iPhone 8 and X and cannot run iOS 17, I expect Apple to keep pushing out security updates for them (iOS 16) for at least another year.

Sad to see that the iPhone X got killed after only 5 years. I know that's a long time compared to any Android phone but I was still hoping to see the iPhone X beat the iPhone 5Ss record of 6 major version updates.
The X started with iOS 11, so it will have 6 major versions as well. Although it doesn't beat the record holder, which is the 6s at 7 major versions (iOS 9-15).
