Just installed iOS 17, and got a warning that my phone was out of space. Took a look and "System Data" has taken 30% of my phone's storage. WTF?

Traditional the only way to get that back is to backup and restore. Has any ever seen that number go down?

yeah!! The system data category was HUGE at first, but after a couple restarts and some patience, it managed to get close to where it was before the upgrade. There were also a few apps that were just taking up a bunch (like 4-5 GB each) of storage according to Settings, so I just deleted and reinstalled them and that fixed it!

I’ve restarted a few times and also powered off for a good 5-10 minutes and it’s still huge at 133gb. Any more advices?

A category called Synced Content has been taking up storage as well. 66GB on my 14P.

I'm probably like the worst person to ask, but "Synced Content" on mine is taking up no storage. Maybe it's a bug on certain models??? Or maybe it'll go away in time.

Hopefully. There is a thread in here on it and it’s an issue you can find via a Google search. I’ve just never seen a solution. I did back up my phone to iTunes on my windows laptop just before I updated. Maybe that’s the problem? I might just do a wipe and restore tomorrow nothing changes overnight.

What was the storage capacity of your device and free space before the upgrade vs after the upgrade?

I upgraded my iPhone 11 Pro Max from iOS 16.4.1 to iOS 17 RC but decided to go with iOS 16.6 RC then upgraded to iOS 16.7 RC OTA so I was not able to compare the before and after...

Same issue on my iPad. Synced Data filled my iPad storage completely and increased to more than 5GB on my iPhone. Such a pain! It doesn't seem to help if you offload or delete apps or other content to free up space. The System Data simply expands to take up any space freed up.

On an iPhone 14 pro I had 61.68 gb free before iOS 17 install.

After install 41.88 gb free!!!

What the heck!!!

Seeing it on my iphone 12, cleared out about 4GB before the ios 17 install, within one day I woke to my phone lighting up with full storage message. Rebooting seems to help short term, then it fills again. Beta and logging flags left on? Frustrating, given this is the first time in decades that I updated on day 0.

It happened again yesterday on an iPhone 11 Pro. It said storage was full, taken up by "Synced content" and "System data". I removed apps which left 4GB free. Without adding any content, this morning the storage is full again. Apple needs to address this. It's obviously a flaw in iOS 17.

iPhone 14 Pro Max here. ~320GB +/- storage used before iOS 17 install, now I've got about ~480GB +/- used. That means I've only got something like 30GB remaining (I've got a 512GB phone). This is crazy. Anybody else experience this or have ideas? I'm currently installing iOS 17.01 and hoping for a fix, but...?

PLEASE don't tell me I need a 1TB phone. That's crazy talk!

I may have spoken too soon. Just got back from the gym and my phone now shows 485.95 used. I am at a loss as to what's increasing my used storage space by 163GB!

I just updated to 17.0.1 today and my used storage increased about 15gb. I updated about 5 hours ago, also did a 10 minute power off awhile ago.

Not happy.

I’m watching my phone and every 10 minutes I check storage and the used storage keeps increasing.

Something weird is going on with system storage or what it's reporting... I wrote this in the iOS 17 thread but prior I was using 50GB in iOS16 after I upgraded I was at 120GB, mostly due to app sizes growing substantially. There was some attributing to system data but not nearly as much as the apps. Short term solution seems to be uninstalling and reinstalling the apps but the reporting still doesn't seem correct.

iphone 12 running 17.0.1, just cleared out another 1.5GB after everything seemed stable, but now I don't have enough space to even snap a photo. Argh. What a mistake, this first time updating on a .0 release (now .0.1)!

Same issue here, 54gb in system data after setting up my 15 PM, was over 30gb this morning on my pro. All the usual suspects of downloads, web data etc cleared. Also noticed some app sizes got out of hand immediately after installing ios17 on my 14p this week. Hoping it will resolve itself in the next release

My phone is slowly gaining free space back over the last two days. Gained about 5gb since Saturday.

@ab2c4 Can you say if you made any changes that allows space to actually increase over time?
This is crazy. I just checked and my used space just went UP by 2gb over the last four hours. This all is acting so weird I wonder if the reporting is what is messed up.

I've had this issue as well on my iPhone 11.

Sync'd data seemed to be a new category that showed after I backed up my phone to my computer and installed iOS17.

What is strange is that its almost the exact same size as my music storage. It seems to be doubling the amount of music I have stored.

Originally after the iOS17 update system data was showing 10GB but after removing and then reinstalling a few random apps, I was told this would help, stsyem data went down to 1GB.
