Isn’t this slightly skeuomorpic?

That thing everyone hated
Eh? Who hates skeuomorphism?

"This shouldn't behave like other things in my life which serve the same function"

Leather and cloth texture backgrounds for windows went out of style when we got retina screens. They ate up a ton of space while also looking worse because uncanny valley. They made text harder to read. It also really didn't make sense for every app to have to pick out its own wood grain, or think about whether more used buttons should have a patina.

Making an app or website look "rich" gets you attention. Making every app or website look uniquely rich is just confusing noise that eats up storage/bandwidth.

I agree that bugs should be fixed before these extras are added. When I attempt to paste, the word "paste" has been missing from the contextual menu for quite some time now (see below). I know the word "paste" belongs there, so it's not much of an issue for me, but I can imagine the frustration that iOS newbies might be experiencing.

Interesting. Wonder if it is phone model specific? Probably should file a feedback

Huh? I already explained it.
Not really, all you did was write this:
The bulge happens at the place along the volume bar which the volume is changed towards. So yes, this is attention to detail, no quotation marks required.
That doesn't explain why off-center. The volume bar should be shorter or it should be tackled in the other way but like this, it's just bad design.

It explains exactly why. Obviously they didn‘t want to make the volume bar shorter, which is the right call as volume changes would be harder to make out visually.

Countless? Really?? Are you just awash in bugs over there? On your day-one beta software? Sheesh.
Yes actually, on release builds of iPhone OS.

I am a heavy driver of Apple Maps and since one of the last OS updates a few months ago its been super buggy. It has dumped me at random destinations on completely wrong street names blocks away from the address its routing me to. It has declared I reached my destination 5 miles away while still showing my route and following my movement. When I disconnect my charging cable, the phone often desides to go back to where I started my trip, and replays GPS movement back to where I am while the phone locks during this odd behavior until it gets back to where I actually am.

Thats just Maps

I feel like there is something wrong with their background audio/streaming APIs. I've got several streaming apps including Sirus XM. A behavior I keep seeing and cursing Apple's name about is almost everything I do while background streaming causes it to pause. Pull down control center? 50% change of pausing. Ask Apple Maps for a route? Audio pauses 4 out of 5 times. Lock your phone? Another 50/50. Switching apps (not from the streaming app), also has a high probability of causing the audio to pause. These are clearly system functions causing the app to pause. Could it be the app? I suppose, though they aren't small companies either and should be able to fix their apps if its on their end.

Then there are endless problems with CarPlay reliability. Could it be the vehicle OEM? Sure maybe, but it seems to be across OEM so its probably also Apple.

And those are just the areas of the phone I use heavily and cause me non-stop pain.

So it is a bad design because buttons "push out" the bezel in a bad, not consistent illogical from the buttons' point of view spot, there's no way around it.

aaaand... it's not centered 😂

"attention" to details
This screenshot was constructed by MR or some other media agency - not actually apple promo. They put the screenshot on the wrong iPhone frame.

I tried it...it is nifty, but gives me a queasy feeling when actually trying to look at the volume level while changing it - and I am not prone to motion sickness. It shouldn't push the bar over at the same time, just animate the indent.

CSS is hard
1. It's SwiftUI, not CSS.
2. Aligning a UI element relative to a physical control that scales to different devices is no small feat. It's not a simple matter of "put it here." Not only does it have to adapt to the right position different viewports, the UI doesn't just receive signals from hardware around the coordinates in which they exist.

You can argue they shouldn‘t have implemented this feature, but if this feature was to be implemented, they did it the right way.

Maybe ask yourself, which is the more important visual information the bulge can give the user: where exactly on the device the button is that the user just pressed (your design preference) or in which direction the volume is changed (Apple‘s design preference)?

Only Apple can have this crazy attention to detail.

For example, Apple Pencil Pro having digital shadows is another mind-blowing thing that only Apple could think of.
I like that, but I don’t understand why it would appear in screenshots and screen recordings if it’s a shadow of the pen.

If I hand someone else my notebook, i am handing off the contents, and the shadow doesn’t make sense to be on it as well

Let’s be real, it’s probably just a config file indicating the positions

Whatever question I ask myself it will not change the fact that it's off-center and from a button point of view it doesn't make sense - it bulges in the wrong spot. No amount of reasoning from your side or questions asked will change this fact.

See, I believe the point of view of the user is more important than the „button point of view“. I‘m a little disappointed that you can‘t or won‘t see that there is a reason for this design (even if you don‘t like it), don’t even answer my simple question and prefer to believe this is an oversight by all involved, but that‘s that, then.

I don’t see the point either. It should be vertically centered with the button.

I think and hope they are going to change it. If you are the one who implemented/designed this, you will probably see our feedback in the ticket queue

Then maybe you’d like to answer which is the more important visual information the bulge can give the user: where exactly on the device the button is that the user just pressed (your design preference) or in which direction the volume is changed (Apple‘s design preference)?

Visual feedback of input is good… but that’s literally what the slider on the screen was already doing?

If this was part of a wholistic rethink of that side volume interface it could make sense. But as of now it just feels like doing something for the sake of it. I mean why stop there. If more is always better, add some glitter particles bursting out the side of the screen when you press a button?

I‘m pretty sure this is mainly intended for the 16 (Pro) phones with this rumored static buttons.
Curious if this will last for older iPhones in the final release.

I will wait for you to answer it when Apple fixes this
