Now the big question is do I go for 18.7 RC or 26.0 RC?

I am really happy with iOS 18.x now it seems to have matured, but am tempted by iOS 26.0 as well.

I say go with iOS 26.0 RC. Why? You'll have a longer opportunity to try things out and downgrade back to iOS 18 if needed.

Make a local backup before upgrading first. You won't be able to restore a backup made with iOS 26 to iOS 18.

I'd say it depends on how you use your device, apps being used and how important it is.
Personally I'll stay on iOS 18 until it stops receiving security updates. Usually its when the x.1 is being released.
If there aren't any killer features only available in iOS 26 that you really need stay on the latest version of iOS 18.

Good day. I currently have 18.6.1. Will I be able to roll back to 18.6.1 after installing 26? (18.6.2 drains the battery more, so I don't update to it)

No, Apple stopped signing 18.6.1 a couple weeks ago. You would have to downgrade to 18.6.2 (or 18.7 when 18.6.2 is no longer signed).

So, 18.7 final next week i guess ?
Yes. Since there are likely to be security patches in iOS 26 and iOS 18.7 they will prob release them at the same time. I can imagine that there are compability tweaks as well so that different versions work well together without issues.
There are a few minor bugs as well that might be fixed, but iOS 18 are solid these days. Have around 1500 users running the latest version on a number of different devices and they all seem happy.

All I want is for them to release the IPSW so that people can perform a clean install, or at least update through a mac, and not have to necessarily rely on an OTA update. But usually the last update is launched as OTA only so…

So, 18.7 today or tomorrow ?

I think theres no point in holding the security-fixes back.

iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max will continue to receive iOS 18.x updates while iPhone 11 series up to iPhone 16 series may only get up to iOS 18.7.2

I really hope that anyone who wanted to update to iOS 18 from an earlier version made it in time while the last IPSW was still signed. IIRC that was iOS 18.6.1

I don’t know if Apple is still offering an OTA update to iOS 18.7.1 for devices running iOS 17 and earlier.

I am quite happy to have installed iOS 18.6 IPSW right in time, and then performing the OTA update to 18.7 on my iPhone and iPad. Phew!!!

They are A15/M2 devices, they run really well on 18.7, and I’m afraid that iOS 26 would have sinked their battery life and performance. That’s without taking into account the bugs that usually plague the early versions of a new major release.

I’m staying at iOS 18.7 indefinitely, keeping an eye to iOS 26 development, despite not being too convinced by Liquid Glass or the new iPad multitasking. I have plenty of time to decide.

My future M5 Mac though, that will come with macOS preinstalled with no downgrade option…

I really wish my iOS/iPadOS 18 devices to integrate seamlessly with macOS 26.

I hope it will run snappy and smooth like a baby butt, with optimized battery life
I'm pretty sure it would have been released today if there had been an update. I can't recall a time when Apple didn't release security updates on the same day as others. Apple did release updates for older versions of macOS today; just nothing for iOS/iPadOS it seems.
