I'm more annoyed that Apple is bent on putting ads in their maps app and maps search. I remember a time when Apple was 100% opposed to invasive ads. Now it's one of their cash cows.
In my opinion, Apple is going down the wrong path. This is not what most Maps users want. Aside from the USA, I don't see where Apple could make money from advertising in Maps. In my opinion, it’s necessary to first convince iOS users to use Maps. Apple needs to promote its application more, but for that, it requires the New Map Data in more countries and the DCE in more cities. The pace of the rollout for these two features is still too slow. Additionally, there should be a more effective reporting system, as it often takes time and is not always corrected. How does Apple expect to convince businesses to pay for advertising on Maps when their data is much less reliable than Google's?

Apple is NOT putting “ads” in Maps.

They are simply taking money for priority parsing in search. No different than what you see when searching apps in the App Store today.

I think it will actually be a good thing as it will require business to provide updated POI info and/or pay to be featured at the top of the search list.

"The system is said to be similar to Search Ads in the App Store, which allows developers to pay to have their software appear in a promoted slot above other results for relevant queries. Apple's approach reportedly leverages AI to deliver relevant and useful results, in a better interface than similar offerings from Google and other companies. Gurman warned that the move risks some amount of consumer backlash."

I guarantee it will cause backlash with this user. Google Maps, Waze and others will become my map of choice.

They’ve had this for years!! I left Waze for commuting 10 years ago when their stupid promoted places started filling up my actual map.

Just like the App Store, I expect a “promoted” business or two at the top if I do a general search. No different than Amazon, Google…everyone else! I’ll swipe on by…or take a look.

…Google maps is better for satellite view though.

For me at least with cities that have the 3D/flyover satellite view this is due to Apple on iOS no longer switching to the real satellite image when tapping the 2D button on iOS like it with ios15 and earlier. Now tapping 2D just switches the viewing angle to being over top of the 3D/flyover satellite view instead of switching to the real satellite view like in the past.

In MacOS (the one before 26) and on an old device with iOS 15 tapping or clicking on “2D” still switches to the real satellite view which is often more up to date than the 3D satellite view. When the 3D satellite has been updated fairly recently it’s not a big deal, but for some cities the 3D can be 4 to 5 or even more years older. I have seen some cities pushing 7 or 8 years out of date.

On my iOS 26 device the only work around I can use when I want to see the more current satellite view of a city with the 3D view available is to go to the report something missing reporting structure, expand the map, and then select satellite view (if only in sat view select another view and then go back and select satellite view). So the satellite data is there and available but is just being overridden by the 3D/flyover satellite view on purpose by Apple. It’s also limited in functionality due to just being about reporting something missing, just uses part of available screen, and is only temporary and only exists in that report something missing menu, but it at least lets me see new construction and new roads and so on. It’s ridiculous that apple would prefer to show an out of date “satellite” view on iOS (not sure if ipad the same). For the cities really out of date by almost a decade it should be an embarrassment to Apple to only allow such an old image on their phones/ios.

My location is fairly recent, and I'm in a more rural, less dense area.

I use satellite a lot. While I agree it would be nice to have the most recent data, I often find it's not that old in the USA. Not sure about other geos.

Does your “preferred routing” override common sense? I’m messing around with Maps at the moment. There’s a really bad accident on my normal highway route to work. When I choose to go to work, Maps is only showing me one route…my preferred route. ETE of 24 minutes, when it’s normally 10 minutes without traffic. Maps won’t show me any alternatives.

Google Maps and Waze are both showing routes prioritizing local roads, with an ETE of 17 minutes.

I just find this odd.

I always thought I'd be happy when the day came that our informative little forum here became slow and boring because Maps got so good...but here I am still waiting for the next big update (DCE features everywhere...or hell, at least LookAround in the US?)

Keep the questions/issues/comments coming...it's always quietest before the storm...right??

Unfortunately, the latest releases of the New Map Data do not give much hope. Thailand still doesn't have Look Around, and Mexico has very limited Look Around coverage.

Granted, Ireland received full coverage, but it remains quite small. I imagine that the United Kingdom will be next, followed by the USA. I don't expect Apple to release the USA in one go, but rather in several stages.

Regarding the DCE, it is still very slow to release a few cities each year, so for a country like the USA, it is simply unimaginable…

I guess that's my point...they've slowed down dramatically...and I've always felt that any update to the US map would be dramatic...just for effect...like, "Here's LookAround for the entire country...and by the way, how about DCE features as well!!"

We know they have the data...I think they've been prepping a huge release and it could come at any time.

Well, I gave apple maps a solid try. I've been using it for over a month now, trying to get preferred routes to take hold and do what I wanted it to do automatically. At best, it will give me 3 route options that I have to look at and choose from to go the way I want. But at worst, it doesn't show my preferred route as an option and I have to just ignore the directions and go the way I want.

I've decided to go back to waze. Waze shows my estimated speed and the current speed limit, even if I'm not actively in a route. It also does a pretty good job of warning for police, accidents, and hazards. These functions just seem too valuable to give up to deal with possibly having a better route sometimes. Oh well, maybe next time.
