is it just me, or is the Apple server still swamped with update requests that it can't handle?

Been trying since yesterday to update via wifi and every time I can only get as far as the "downloading" and "estimating time remaining" page which times out after a few minutes with the message "an error occurred downloading iOS 5.1"

Have tried on both the iPhone and iPad, with the same result. I guess the next step is to try the wired method through iTunes, but just wondering if anyone else is having the same problem?

If you are with sky it seems a lot of people are having trouble with this. You will need to change your DNS to an opendns temporarily to update wireless.

I'm not with Sky and have tried both at home (Talktalk) and at work (BT).

do as suggested. temporarily change DNS server on device to OpenDNS or GoogleDNS and it will update straight away.

I am on Sky internet, I had to change the DNS on my iPhone, iPad and Apple TV - otherwise none of them would update. Pretty crap really.

I half wonder if Sky have intentionally removed the DNS for Apple's update server to reduce data loads....

I'm on Sky too, had to change the DNS on the 4s to get it to update.

My ipad1 though refuses to even find an update even with changing the DNS, it just throws up and error when you try to look for an update... :(

Actually, I've also had the same issue with the iPad :(

i don't think it's a specific Sky issue, as i've seen the same issue reported by people in Canada as well.

I'm with Sky and updated my 4 last night at about 11pm OTA and the ipad2 about 30 mins ago OTA also, with no problems, didn't have to change any settings.

The iPad was quicker this morning than the phone last night to be fair, so maybe you're just unlucky with the timing?

I'm on Sky. The OTA or iTunes downloads just time out.

/EDIT : Just changed the iPhone to use OpenDNS and it's downloading the OTA fine now.

I updated as soon as it was released on Wednesday evening and it downloaded without any problems.

I'm with Sky and don't use OpenDNS or anything.

No issues updating mine and wife's phones morning after announcement.

O2 broadband but using open dns. Perhaps sky is temporarily blocking or limiting it as the demand must be huge.

as i said, i don't believe it's a UK Sky issue, as i've seen the same reports from people in Canada and from UK user on other ISPs.

you didn't have the issue as you are already using OpenDNS, which is the solution to the problem.

WiFi..*update through iTunes ~ just days of "contacting the iPad software update server" ~ *No update
update OTA ~ No ~ fail message. Retry for same again on both iPads
change DNS to open ~ No update
forget network and reset on iPads ~ No update
reset network on Mac ~ No update

Tried all several times. *

The Mac's 3G T stick with 2 gig left on the 4 gig monthly cap is the last option..
but 2 Failed part downloads through iTunes on first day equals over a gig wasted, doesn't bode well. Will try WiFi for a few more days first.

MBP OSX 10.7.3 & Backed up * iPad 1 & 2. iOS 5.0.1.& Backed up.
This is the first failed update I have experienced since early 2004.

Result

Changed DNS settings to OpenDNS and then GoogleDNS - Failed

Changed DNS settings to 8.8.8.8 (GoogleDNS IP address) - Result on iPhone 4, iPod Touch, and AppleTV, but still failing in iPad2 and iPhone 4S

Plugged iPad into MBP, recognised that there is an update, but then failed with "contacting the iPad software update server", just sits there. So changed DNS settings on MBP to 8.8.8.8 and Bingo, update downloaded and installed!

Not good for a new rollout
