I've read in numerous threads that people with the iPhone 3GS are concerned about the "hit" that iOS 5 might take on their devices so I thought I'd create a thread to say what several have already said: that iOS 5 runs GREAT on the 3GS...but also to show visually what some (I'm surely missing a few) of the new features look like. So here goes...

LOCK SCREEN

Lock Screen Camera (double tap the Home button)

picture.php

Lock Screen Notifications (tap the notification icon to reveal action)

picture.php

MESSAGES

iMessage is integrated into the Messages app and is automatically enabled for recipients with an iOS 5 device (iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch)

picture.php

The keyboard can now be hidden by sliding it down while within a message (instead of going out of the message and back in)

picture.php

From the Settings>Messages menu, you can toggle whether or not to use iMessage, along with enabling Read Receipts and sending messages as SMS when iMessage is not available

picture.php

CALENDAR

Calendar changes to detailed multi-day view when in portrait mode

Helpful

The point was to create a sort of "one stop shop" for new-to-the-iPhone 3GS owners since I'm guessing there will be somewhat of an influx of them now that the 3GS is free on AT&T (w/ contract). Perhaps this is not helpful to anyone but, well, that's all I was going for...to be helpful.

I'm sure it will be helpful. Actually I have a 4 and the custom vibration feature wasn't turned on automatically - now I know how to turn it on, so thanks for that :)

I've got an iPhone 4 but IOS 5 runs better on it than IOS 4.x ever did. I wouldn't hesitate to do the update if I were a 3GS owner.

r2shyyou - I have the iPhone 4 and 4S. I've been looking for a brief on the new features, and this is the best I've found. Thank you so much for your labor in putting this together for us.

Now when someone asks, "What's news in iOS5?" I can answer. I'll also share this link. Again, much appreciated! :)

Thanks for this. Didn't know about the custom vibrations.

I couldn't find that one.

@lilnyc - to get to Custom Vibrations, go to Settings>General>Accessibility and turn on Custom Vibrations under the Hearing heading. Then, under Settings>Sounds scroll to the bottom where you'll see the Vibration Patterns heading. Tap on Vibration and then at the bottom you should see the Custom heading where you can tap on Create New Vibration.

Have fun with it, it's pretty neat!

Love it :) I actually didn't know about hiding the keyboard from iMessage or sliding directly on notifications!
Thanks for putting it together!

I'd like to agree with those saying the iPhone 3GS is fine. It's running GREAT on my 3GS. I'm incredibly impressed. It definitely is running faster than iOS 4, and I may be hallucinating, but I think I'm even seeing a bit of increased battery life. Safari is definitely faster as well. I'm amazed that the update gave a new spark of life to my old phone that seemed like it was on its last leg.

Go iOS 5! Now if only I could get Siri...

Useful thread and thank you. Just tried to rearrange widgets in Notification Centre manually. Dragged Stock Widget up the list so it sits below the Weather Widget and tap Done. If I go back into Notifications however, the Stock Widget is back at the bottom of the list. Bug, or just me?

Edit. Just tried a reset and it's fixed the problem. Sorry.
